Coil tap or coil split on Antiquities or Seth lovers?

I have a Gibson LP that comes with 57 Classics that can be coil tapped or split? Is it possible that should I change them to the Antiquities or seth lovers' that I retain the coil tap function?

Thanks!

You have to either: 1) find the splitable version already in stock at some retailer, 2) order a shop floor custom through a retailer, 3) get a regular version (new or used) and send it in to the factory to be converted to be splitable ($20 per pickup), 4) have a local repair person do the same, or 5) do the same yourself.

I don't think you really mean "tap" when you are saying "tap." I think you mean "split." But just in case you really do mean tap, then that is a Custom Shop order, and probably $170 per pickup at minimum.

I'm under-whelmed by '57's myself, even with different magnets. You're better off with a set of Seth's, which are one of the world's great PAF's. Some members aren't entirely thrilled with Ant's as the mags are aged (degaussed) which that takes away some of the high end and output, and fully charged A2's don't have a lot of either to begin with. That's a bigger issue in LP's which are warm-toned to begin with.

You're confusing 'tap' and 'split' (common mistake). HB's are almost never tapped, and it's something done when they're being wound; you can't do it after the fact. Some recent Gibsons come with push-pulls for coil spilt (also called 'coil cut').

The best way to do coil cut is via spin-a-split, so you can all the in between tones. You don't have to go all the way down to one coil.

Is this something that can be easily done or is that a functionality that comes with the pups?

Also is it true that the Ants sound thinner than the Seth Lovers? I am looking for a warm fat tone, an example would be like this.

I don't think Ant's are necessarily thinner, they just have less high end and bite. If you like really warm PU's, or have a bright guitar, you may like Ant's. If you want more high end and cut in the bridge and neck, then Seth's are a better choice.

Thanks, would you feel the Ants or the Seth's would probably sound closer to that youtube link?

It's incredibly easy, all you need is a HB with 4 leads. Takes several minutes and no parts are needed. You change a couple wires on the neck tone pot and make it into a 2nd volume pot for the neck, but for one coil only. As you turn down the volume on the one coil, you get more single coil sound, mixed in with the HB sound. That adds treble and thins out the mids, and you can adjust that as much as you want. Problem with coil cut ('Split') is you get one coil or two, nothing in between. But some of the best tones are with unbalanced coils (part of the 'magic' of the original PAF's). It's especially useful on neck HB's, which tend to be warm and thick, sometimes dark and muddy. Spin-a-split can clean that up. There's wiring diagrams online, maybe even on this site.

I had the same issue with my new Jazz w/ A3 bars, the split sound is just a tad wimpy, too much treble, not enough of anything else, so I put trim pots like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/5-x-100K-OH...160?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ab055f4d8 in between the ground and split points (where the red and white wires meet) and it solves the problem, gives it some bite and some body at the same time. I'd guess the trim pot value is rather low, between 10k and 20k, but I didn't measure it with a multi meter. If you do this with a regular pot and go "spin a split" style, you'll probably find that all the usable range is near the very bottom of the dial, even if you use a linear pot.
