coil tapping via mini toggle ?

Hey guys. after having succesfully installed my hot rails pickup in the bridge of my tele, i would now want to be able to use its coil tap feature

i dont really want to buy a push pull pot and have to unsolder everything on one of my old pots and then re-solder it all,

i was thinking about getting a mini toggle switch, drilling a small hole on my control plate between my tone and volume pots and installing the switch there.

would that work? is there enough space in the control cavity to allow it?

also, what kind of switch would i use for this, my guess is an on/off switch, but i'm not sure.

thanks alot,

Re: coil tapping via mini toggle ?

you'd have to unsolder and resolder several things anyway if you want to put an extra toggle in there. Add this up with drilling a hole and buying the switch and that would be quite a lot of unnecessary work. Just buy a push/pull, install it and be happy. it will save you time and you won't devalue the guitar by putting additional holes into it.

Re: coil tapping via mini toggle ?

what would i have to unsolder if i wanted to install a toggle? wouldnt i just have to solder the two tapping wires on one pole, and solder another post to ground?

Re: coil tapping via mini toggle ?

ok,a bit less soldering with the toggle, but not really much(about 2 or 3 solder joints less). But drilling a hole into the guitar is a permament change and can destroy it's value. Also drilling it and installing a new toggle will be more work than the just few additional solder joints you'd have with a push-pull

Re: coil tapping via mini toggle ?

well cheif, thanks alot for the advice. however, i decided to ignore it, lol. i went ahead, bought a mini toggle, drilled my chrome plate and installed it in 10 minutes. i'm very happy with the end results, and i love the original look that it gives my tele (which is in part what i was shooting for)

Re: coil tapping via mini toggle ?

I'm going to do the same thing you did to split my Stag Mag. I just don't care for the push/pull operation.

Re: coil tapping via mini toggle ?

nice job, me too i like better mini toggle switches than pull-push pot. i founded they are more easy to switch, altough with pull-push you can spare place and drilling holes in boby and pickguard!

Re: coil tapping via mini toggle ?

sorry, i forgot that teles have those removealbe electronic covers on which everything is mounted. That way there's not a real problem. Good job.

Re: coil tapping via mini toggle ?

I like push-push for easier on-the-fly operation than a push pull.

FTR, the mod you performed is splitting the humbucker, not a coil tap. However, both can be done with any DPDT switch.

Re: coil tapping via mini toggle ?

Out of interest, how are you finding the coil tap tone? How does it compare with your single coil?

I'm about to fit a rails humbucker to my Strat and I'm bricking myself that I'm going to ruin the position 4 sound!

Re: coil tapping via mini toggle ?

Honostly, even splitting a rails pickup is going to drastically alter your notch tones. However, splitting the rails pickup will give you a humbucking tone from the notch position.

Re: coil tapping via mini toggle ?

mike, could you please explain to me the difference between a coil tap and splitting a pickup? thank you.

Scarabunga, my hot rails in single mode doesnt sound half as twangy as the stock single coil did. i kind of miss the original tone, but the awesome distortion makes up for it.

Re: coil tapping via mini toggle ?

i got an hot rail in my strat in bridge position and splitted it got a nice "single coil sound".

Thanks for ignoring the fellow's lecture about guitar values... YOU own the damm guitar. It is your guitar and you can do what you want with it. A small toggle is intuitive and simple and cheap and I like one better than a push/pull pot. Aria Pro II from Japan had a 'superstrat' with 3 mini-toggles to cut on/off the pickups any way you want. They didn't consider it as hindrance or value-reducer.

Re: coil tapping via mini toggle ?

How high or low does the hotrail sit? If you lowered it to balance volume with a neck single, yeah, it's gonna be a bit weak if split

I doubt anyone cares since this thread is 12 years old.
