college dorm room amp shootout

Re: college dorm room amp shootout

Oh yeah, and I have a first generation Vypyr and a VIP. Both of them sounded good enough for me to have effects loops added to them. The K-Stein on the first generation and the 6534 on the VIP are amazing sounding.

Oh the line 6 is not great at all. If I were buying one today if get the peavey. But the key is "how is the super low volume?" And "can I hear it with a drum kit". If you intend to play with others at least

This. I use one of these in my apartment and it's loud enough that he could jam with people if he wanted. Hell it's loud enough that he could play a show if he wanted. It also has a headphone jack in it to practice in silence.

Re: college dorm room amp shootout

I rolled into dorms my freshman year with a 4x12 slanted Crate cab and rack unit.... the RA's saw me moving in... they immediately started making notes in the black book. It's a good thing my roommate was a music fan.

Anyway, a used pocket Pod and a good set of headphones is probably the cheapest and most considerate way to practice guitar in dorms. Other than that, I'd look into a used Cube or Line 6. Flexible, decent tones at low volumes. There's always room to upgrade later....

My thoughts are to have him learn the differences between the amps(educate him) and then have him pick it out.... That way he will like it more and thus, turn it on more often.

Just a thought.

Probably better to play them rather than learn the differences. The better the tones coming out, the more he'll play. My Series 10 Strat and Gorilla amp bored me after a few days when I was a kid. If I had access to what's available now I might have stuck with it.

One more vote for a MicroCube. Headphone out can also be run to a PA in a pinch for a jam session.

Re: college dorm room amp shootout

as i mentioned in another thread, my youngest is headed off to college in a couple of months and, as he has recently started playing guitar, needs a small but decent amp ... price point should be in the $100-$150 range

contenders so far are Line 6 Spider IV 15, Peavy Vypyr VIP1, Roland Cube 10GX

thoughts among those? other contenders to consider?
thanks

one thing to keep in mind...focus on something thats keeps its playability over practicality. a headphone amp is practical but as a new guitarist starting out you'll want something he'll really enjoy playing through. Otherwise he could lose interest from the wrong reasons. I'd go with either the Vypr or the Cube. The spider is nice but too much gain and they let beginner guitarists become sloppy...if that makes any sense.

Re: college dorm room amp shootout

I rocked a Hughes & Kettner Triamp in my college dorm room. It surprisingly wasn't that big of a deal and it's a great way of getting people to shut the hell up when you've got an exam the next morning. It's amazing what you can do with one sustaining A chord.

Bogner Uberschall

Or a Cube.

I really liked the one Vox Valvetronix I played.

Re: college dorm room amp shootout

The Vox and Fender modeling amps sound better than the ones you listed to start the thread. The Roland Cubes are ok, but something like the Vox Mini 5 Rhythm outperforms it.
