Re: Combing Duncans with DiMarzio's

The Pearly Gates pickup idea came from Billy Gibbons wanting a pickup that sounded like his pickups in his 1959 LesPaul (Pearly Gates) but I heard they were wound alittle hotter than reguler old PAFs. There for the SD Pearly Gates his a little hotter than a SD 59. And thats the same thing with the DM PAF PRO its alittle hotter than the DM PAF.
There for the SD PearlyGates and DM PAF PRO are alot alike.
You know, ......... maybe if you actually TRIED some more of these pickups you'd see what WE mean.
I'm not sure if you are simply gathering facts for your own use, or giving advice. If you are giving advice please get your facts straight before you post misleading information for the less experienced players.
The Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates sounds NOTHING (I repeat) NOTHING AT ALL like a DiMarzio PAF Pro.
The Pearly Gates is an alnico ll pickup and the fact that it is a tiny bit hotter than a '59 (SO SO SO slightly), is not even worth mentioning. It is a warmer sounding pickup with a slightly less jangly top and more midrange. It is much warmer than a DiMarzio PAF Pro.
The DiMarzio PAF Pro is a BRIGHTLY voiced pickup designed specifically to roll off the extra bass that sometimes occurs in the neck postion. If you want to compare the PAF Pro is probably closer to a Duncan Jazz but with increase output. Again, there is NOT an equivalent there either.
Just because the '59 and DiMarzio PAF are "based" on an old PAF doesn't mean they sound alike. Not all old PAF's sound alike. At all. It's a ridiculous statement. AND, more importantly and pertinant to this conversation, the Duncan '59 and DiMarzio PAF do not sound the same.
Don't mean to be at all rude, but these types of "speculative opinions" do a service to no one on here that is honestly looking for information.
