Combo Amp choice VS

Hello,
I need a combo amp for metal playing home rehearsal and maybe gig.
I more into solid state amps because thay are lighter and don't require special care (stand by mode, waiting, warming up, cranck to sounds good etc)
My budget is 700 bucks MAX!!! Can't go higher! COMBO only

My choices are

Peavey 6505+ 112 (only one tube amp here because I liked the sound in youtube video)
Peavey Vypyr VIP 3
Orange CR120c or Orange CR60 if it would be enough for me (As I know modeling amps sounds muddy on high volumes so I thought it could be a winner)
Blackstar ID260
Maybe Line 6 Amplifi 150

Re: Combo Amp choice VS

Digital can be okay, but I still prefer solid state for metal.

Peavey Bandit with an overdrive pedal will do any flavor of metal you need. Look for the silver striped Transtube version with the Sheffield speaker. Made in the USA.
Peavey XXL if you can find one.
Ibanez TBX 150
H&K Warp
Crate GX-130C - Death metal classic.

These all have effects loops which can be handy. (Something that digital amps just about never have.)

Re: Combo Amp choice VS

If you can find one, a Genz Benz El Diablo 60 combo is an amazing metal amp (very tight) with loads of options and very versatile. Best part is, they're quite underrated and discountinued. If you find one they are a steal.

Re: Combo Amp choice VS

Is there a solid state amp that would be lighter and sound close to peavey 6505?

Re: Combo Amp choice VS

The Amplifi has a model of the 5150-II. It's called the Missippi Criminal. I've used that model on my PODxt Live and POD X3 Live and it can get pretty br00tal.

That said, you can get this, which is an amp modeled after the 5150-II in a 2x12 combo format.

I used to be a pretty big detractor of the Behringer/Bugera stuff, but they really knocked it out of the park with the Infinium stuff, so much so that I actually got a 1960 Infinium head and it's my main gigging amp right now.

Here's Seymour Duncan's own Keith Merrow giving a 6260 head a whirl for an idea of what the 6260 and 6262 are capable of.

Re: Combo Amp choice VS

Wow. It's is tube. Why is it so cheap? Too good to be true. But is it really good?

These ones aren't bad either:

If you can't find the XXL, the Bandit with an overdrive pedal will give you similar sounds.

It's made in China and they're not banking on a name like Marshall (who's also making some of their amps in China for a lot more money).

I've been beating my 1960 up by cranking the snot out of it and running it through an attenuator (Jet City Jettenuator). Gets the 6CA7s glowing (I swapped out the stock EL34s).

Now the only question is... Would the 2x12 be too heavy for you? Also, neither I nor Blix (the guy over at TGP and MetroAmp that inspired me to get my 1960) have run our amps through Bugera speakers and Keith Merrow didn't do his demo with Bugera speakers, so I'm not sure what those sound like. However, with Warehouse Guitar Speakers, you can swap them out for something pretty inexpensively if you don't like what the amp comes with.

Re: Combo Amp choice VS

Little bit heavy but I may go with one if absolutely have to. The Orange cr120c 2x12 lighter but I am not sure about the sound and it expensive. I was wandering will the Orange combo sound like head with cab did in flufs video here.

I will probably move a lot so 1x12 is a good choice if it can be loud enough for rehearsal and gig. And sound good of course

Re: Combo Amp choice VS

^^^^ +1, I used to have an RG 200 2x12 combo back when I was younger and playing metal. Great amp

Re: Combo Amp choice VS

Bandit with a speaker change
the Sheffield speaker is generally considered inferior

I know that a Bandit 65 with a Cannabis Rex sounds like a Marshall stack when miked

my buddy gigs one and loves it

I thought Bandits came with Blue Marvel speakers? Those are garbage. I'm quite fond of my 412MS with its Sheffield 1290s.

Re: Combo Amp choice VS

the older eighties 65 and 75 came with scorpions
then in the nineties they got shefields
then blue marvels when the production went to China

I thought the red stripe Peaveys were still US made. I know those had Blue Marvels when I sold them back in the early 2000s.

Re: Combo Amp choice VS

You have to like the the Orange sound and if you don't mind a combo, the CR60 is a decent amp. I just couldn't get along with the stock speaker - the News to the World speaker! It sounds like a blanket is over the amp when compared with a better quality amp. Thanks to another poster on the amp board, I switched to a Governor and this speaker made a major improvement in the sound. With the stock speaker, the gain channel sounded like a gooey ball of fuzz rolling down the tunnel and engulfing me. With the Governor, the gain channel has tightened up some and has a flame thrower center. And the clean channel now has greatly improved note clarity and separation. Yeah, I am not reviewer.

First generation red stripes were USA made, then they moved them to China. It's one of the reasons I suggest the silver stripe one, those were all made in the USA.

Bugera amps are incredible value IMO. Yes they are made in China, yes some people have had problems with them as some people have had with basically every brand (I am not aware of a single brand with 100% perfection and 0 complaints,) no they are not too good to be real ;) I would recommend Bugera but also think the Peavey or Randall route is good as well.

The Bugera speakers that are, I think, made by Turbosound, are supposed to be pretty good. I don't know if they switched to those for everything and/or put them in that combo. I have a couple older amps (Peavey and Mesa). I was looking for a lower powered el84 amp without spending an arm and a leg. I ended up going with the Bugera V22 head. I don't know how long it will last but it is a great sounding amp and it cost half of my budget limit. Good to hear you are finding the 1960 gig worthy. Bugera may have come as close as possible to nailing it with some of their clones. I wouldn't have mentioned Bugera here but you went first :-)
