Common Laney Mods.

Hey there Laney brothers, I was wondering if there are commonly known mods for Laney, for AORs specifically. I mean, I heard of the Soldano mod which is from what I undestand is for any amp, than there is Keely mod for DS-1, so are there "intstitutionalized" mods for AORs ???
Thanks Dudes.

Re: Common Laney Mods.

Oh, I am just curious of what's out there, I mean from what I understand Bogner was a great Marshall modder and than look what happent, so just keeping my radar fresh that's all.

Re: Common Laney Mods.

Pierre, was doing some mods (or at least researching them) for his AOR, so you should ask him. there's a couple of guys with AORs on here, but FAIK they're not modded

Re: Common Laney Mods.

I did get a couple of mods but I don't know where they went. I only ever rebiased my AOR 30 combo. It needs a recap so right now unfortunately, the amp is a little out of service. I run a POD 2.0 through its effects return to minimize the damages, and because I have nothing else.

Re: Common Laney Mods.

When you say (Mods) What exactly are you looking for? There are a few tweaks that can be done to your Laney (i.e.) I modded my Laney for a more vintage tone.

Well I want the classic Laney "dark" tone to be there but I want a little more bottom end tight gain. Thanks man.

Re: Common Laney Mods.

I cannot remember specifics, but I tweaked my AOR quite a bit. I wanted more warmth and a more open gain. Many of the JCM 800 mods will work for this amp. I would search some of those out. More than perhaps any amp I have owned, the pre tubes make a huge difference in the personality of the amp. One swap can make dramatic changes. I messed around with 12At7s mixed with 12Ax7s and had very nice results.

Re: Common Laney Mods.

I've digged up the post that Kevlar made on his "The Return of AMPZILLA" thread he made a while back where he went into a little bit of detail of what he did to his Laney AOR:

Kevlar3000 said:
I have upped the value of just about all of the caps. More bottom, and warmer character this way. I swapped the 50+50 can cap in the pre section with a 32+32. Gives it a more vintage vibe. Softer around the edges. I clipped the cap off of the master volume control and added a 470K resistor in its place as well as clipped the cap off of the pre gain. This tweak made an amazing difference with the hi gain channel, more bottom, earlier breakup and much more natural response. I put a .68 cap on the presence pot, instead of the .1. ( The George Lynch tweak) I also use a 12AT7 in the 4th tube position, the furthest to the left. Really opens up the hi gain inputs distortion.
This amp now sounds almost identical to an early 70s metal panel Marshall, it is no longer an 80s sounding amp. It is warmer and bigger, still has plenty of gain but with true old school flavor. I am amazed at how far this head has come. It now is right there with my vintage stuff.

Mine is a 6 knob version, I have never messed with the 8 knob. These amps are extremely picky about tubes, the wrong tube sounds REALLY bad, more than any amp I have owned. Good pre and power tubes make a huge difference, if you still have the original Siemens in it, you are winning 1/2 the battle. I also run mine with an attenuator, so I can really crank it. I tend to not use the boost switches on the hi gain channel, but on the low gain they sound really nice. Lots of variety with settings between inputs. I was shooting for a medium hot gain, 70s flavored machine and really have it where I want it now.

Re: Common Laney Mods.

Hey thanks!!

I am going to have to save that, I have been itching for an AOR lately.

Re: Common Laney Mods.

Try a JJECC83S or a EH12AX7 in tube 1. Both are high gain tubes but pretty silent. They brighten up the tone a little and add balls. I concur about the tubes too.
The other solution is to go the other way. Put some calm tubes in 1 and 2, for less gain but more touch response and less noise.

Re: Common Laney Mods.

While the thread is still alive, I'm just wondering if you can remember the type/brand of pre and power tubes you had in your AOR?

Ist I had Siemens EL34s. I then swapped them for Harma EL34B ( Chinese) that amp like them better, fuller and more open gain. As far as pres, I had quite a mix. Mostly old stuff, I know I had a Mullard 12At7 and an Amperex Bugel Boy in V1. As far as the new stuff, I think that amp likes darker voiced tubes. EH has a lot of upper mids, JJ would likely sit nicely in there.

Re: Common Laney Mods.

Does anyone have sound clips of the AOR?

Re: Common Laney Mods.

I have JJ 6V6s in mine. I have NO IDEA whether I biased it properly or not though. But the new tubes definitely improved it for a short while, before I realized there's something else wrong...

For soundclips, listen to most Ratt songs.
