Commonly seen amps

Re: Commonly seen amps

In the UK I've seen a few Peavey Classics and I thought they sounded really good. Our nearest equivalent is the Laney VC30 - I've got one and it's a great amp for not a whole lot of cash. Obviously we see a lot of Marshalls because they're not so expensive over here. I remember when loads of guys were buying the TSL and saying they were the best Marshall ever. I don't know anyone who's still using one. Always sounded very solid state to me.

I say a guy using a Mesa Lonestar combo a while back and it sounded really sweet.

Blackstar seem to be selling a lot of amps but I guess they're mainly selling to home players because I've yet to see one in a pub.

Seen a couple of guys using Line 6 combos and they just don't cut in a mix. Horrible.

The other guitarist in a band I was in a couple of years back got a Fender Hotrod and it sounded terrible. The clean channel was almost acceptable but very lacking in character. He changed it for a Laney after one gig.

Re: Commonly seen amps

I see a lot of Oranges in the places I go. Also a lot of Mesas and many many Marshalls. For basses, Ampegs are like standard in my area, although I partial to the Fender Rumble series (using a 350 head with a 4x10 cab).

Re: Commonly seen amps

You see alot of Fenders (Hot Rod series stuff including BJ) and Vox's in rigs when i go out to see bands (alot of indie rock acts so they are going fro that semi clean sound). Alot of backlines are Fenders (HRD) or Marshall JCM 900 half stacks (I use to see these alot at the small stages at festivals).

Re: Commonly seen amps

Mostly either old Marshall Valvestates (quite a few local venues have these as the 'house' amps) or Vox Valvetronix.

Re: Commonly seen amps

Whenever I do a small bar gig with my band, I use my Fender Frontman 25R which has a Eminence Rajun Cajun in it. I only have to crank it up to 3 with that speaker in it and I'm definately heard over the drums.

Don't notice much what others are doing but for me its:

Small bar - this with a C-Rex in the 12" cab.

Big bar, loud crowds and loud drummer - this with two Texas Heats.

Re: Commonly seen amps

All sorts of stuff really, lot of Marshalls of course, mostly JCM 900s, cheaper fenders (blues jr, hot rod, etc) some peaveys, old crate V series stuff, vox valvetronix, and the rare boutique amp (a local guy plays exclusively Groove Tubes amps, has one of just about every model they made)

Re: Commonly seen amps

Marshall half stacks (800's seem to be the most common) and Fender combos (Hot Rod series are very common) IME. Mesa Rectos seem to be pretty popular too, though not as commonplace.
