Compare FullSize JB with JB Jr

Re: Compare FullSize JB with JB Jr

I've found that the Lil '59 and JB jr. have some consistent differences from their full sized counterparts.

They are both a bit more articulate and less forgiving than the '59 and JB.

Less lower octave energy (0-100hz) and more clear 100-200hz range (tighter bass).

The midrange seems a bit more relaxed than the more pronounced midrange peaks of their full sized counterparts. (less honk)

Less "crushed glass" with the Lil '59 and less icepick from the JB jr.

Sure. It's a '92 Mexi. Everything except the nut and frets is new, and they'll be new soon. The trem is the newer high mass block unit. Fender locking tuners. Other than the frets being pretty shot and the nut being pretty worn down, it plays and sounds fantastic - just gotta get that JB in the bridge. Pickguard is on the way so it shouldn't be too long....

Thank you, those are exactly the details I was looking for!

Did you get a pickguard like this one?

Re: Compare FullSize JB with JB Jr

I ordered this one. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B010FWMZCS?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

I figured at $8 if it sucks I can use it temporarily until the one I want is available.

Just ordered this for my next Strat refurb - a 2005 Mexi. It's the one on the left in the attached photo - not nearly as bad of shape as the prior one...

Re: Compare FullSize JB with JB Jr

Wow, nice! Are you gonna throw a JB in it or something else?

Yes. The single coil in the bridge just isn't cutting it for what I need. The Quarter Pounds are easily the fattest single coils I've ever played but some things just need that bridge Humbucker ya know?

The JB jr. and Lil '59 are very good pickups... SD did a fantastic job with them. A '59 with less boom/crushed glass and a JB with less icepick/tighter bass can be good things depending on the guitar.

For those who don't have swimming pool routes (or HSH or HSS routes) and are stuck with the single coil form factor, the Lil '59 and JB jr. are certainly not compromises in tone in any way... in some ways they can do things their full sized counterparts cannot. The JB jr. actually jives with my playing style a bit better than the full sized JB... I was reluctant to try one for years but was blown away when I finally did YMMV.

Re: Compare FullSize JB with JB Jr

I find it fascinating they wouldn't sound almost the same. Why is that? Wouldn't it be the goal?

The goal yes, but I'd be very surprised that they could duplicate all of the key qualities in a much smaller package. For a Lil '59 bridge at 11.7K with a ceramic magnet to sound like a full-size '59B...

Re: Compare FullSize JB with JB Jr

I like the the JB Jr a lot better than the full size JB, which doesn't work for me at all.
