Completely Bummed out with 70th Anniversary Jimi Fuzz

Re: Completely Bummed out with 70th Anniversary Jimi Fuzz

Cool video. Really whets my appetite for an Octavia/o or whatever they're called.

Do the Dunlop Octavia remakes sound like that? Can you get that sound with the Slash fuzz-octave pedal? The mids, they're so ... haunting.

Maybe the new JH fuzzes are a bit higher gain than the older ones...

With a Si Fuzz Face I max the fuzz knob then back it down until the tone sounds right to me...it's never very far and on my Hendrix fuzz I don't have to do it so I didn't mention it but I do know that the BC108 Dunlop used on the oldest ones are gone so maybe they've moved to a slightly higher gain tranny...

Glad it's starting to work for you...

If you want to hear a killer Si Fuzz Face into a killer Super Reverb look no farther than this clip...Fuzz Face starts at 6:44

Re: Completely Bummed out with 70th Anniversary Jimi Fuzz

The Dunlop Octavio sounds a little different than that and the Slash is completely different...

Best bet for that sound is the Chicago Iron Octavia (which is what Philip is using), the Fulltone Octafuzz (which nails it, trust me) or the Voodoo Lab Proctavia which also nails it, trust me!

Well I think I'm going to send this one back, I can't really get what I am looking for. I'm sure I'll keep trying different fuzzes till I find one that works. That ZVex Mastotron sounds pretty fat!

What do you want that you are not getting??

Also are we talking live in the living room type volumes??

Re: Completely Bummed out with 70th Anniversary Jimi Fuzz

Listen I hear what you guys are saying about running a fuzz with a dirty amp, etc. but I need to find a fuzz that fits into my rig, not mold my rig around a fuzz, if that makes sense. It just emphasizes the upper top end too much and doesn't sound thick enough for me. The amp is up around 4 which is as loud as I can go with the Super before it starts to break up. I'm sure I could get it where I need it using my Marshall cranked, or with the Super cranked higher, but I need this to sound right with my Super set clean. That's how I run my rig for gigs. Lots of times I can't get the Super above 3 or it's too loud. So I'm not saying this isn't a good pedal, I'm just saying it isn't going to meet the need I have, which is a thick fat fuzz that cleans up well and will sound good through a clean warm fender amp.

In my experience you sort of have to mold your rig around a fuzz pedal...at least the guys that use fuzz that, to me get the best sound have either molded or at least tweaked their rig to sound it's best with a fuzz pedal.

A Fuzz Face is a nice fat sounding fuzz pedal but maybe a nice germanium FF would be better for you. A Ge FF will have less gain, less top end slice and more midrange in most cases...

sounds like a fuzzface is not the pedal for you.
You might want to look at something less old skool than a fuzzface like a muff type fuzz (pharaohs are good) or maybe a voodoo labs superfuzz. They work more like regular pedals and play nice in chains etc. You lose some of the groovy subtleties and big sweeps of tone variation that you can get using a fuzzface, but it think these types of fuzzes may serve you better. Check out the old boss fuzz too (not the modelling version). That works good in a chain of pedals.

From the clips I have heard of the Superfuzz it sounds exactly like what you want really thick. I have been GASing for one for years.

Re: Completely Bummed out with 70th Anniversary Jimi Fuzz

I've never thought of the superfuzz but I just read up on it and it does sound like what I am looking for. I may go for this, I'll have a credit at PGS for the same price so this may be just the ticket. Thanks Jimmy Rock.

they are pretty damn good. I'm onto my second one (why i got rid of my first ill never remember). Much more touch sensitive, versatile and defined than muff based fuzzes and they work nicely in a chain.
