Compressed sounds vs. Dynamic Sounds

Ok, I think I've got an idea of what compressed and uncompressed amps sound like. I know that vintage Fenders like a '65 Twin Reverb are about as uncompressed as you can get. For the higher gain stuff, VHT seems to be the most uncompressed sounding. My question is this - name some of the guitar heroes that we all know, and rate their tone on a 1-5 scale where 1 is totally uncompressed and 5 is extreme squish. Start with the familiar guitar gods, but get into some lesser known people too.

Jimi?
SRV?
EVH?
Paul Gibert?
Pat Metheny?
Mike Stern?
Steve Vai?

well jimi used a strat with an early marshall, but he did have a lot of feedback to compress his tone, so i'll give him a 3

EVH 35 - listen to eruption, he does solo, tap, double tap, and all of his notes are exaclty the same volume.

slow hand 5 - when I first heard some of creams stuff I thought he was playing a violin. big old lester neck pup no treble on guitar knobs, huge stacks of 100 watters dimed.

jimmy page 2 - he used a good amount of distortion, but songs like stairway and black dog range from some good compression to biting single notes in his chords on clean.

Not to mention that he was also a big user of fuzz... itself a form of compression.

That said, Jimi also knew how to work his guitar volume and played alot of clean stuff as well.... so a 3 is probably fair since he covers both ends of the spectrum quite well.

Frank Gambale -- 4. He squished it kinda hard.
Al DiMeola (fusion era) -- 4. Screaming to the cheap seats.
John McLaughlin (fusion era) -- 3. Subtlety underneath, but he stood on it when the need arose.
Yngvie -- inf + 5. Sweet J#$~$, his ax was almost as loud as his ego... or his hair.
SRV -- 3.5. He stayed just at the speed limit 'til the edge of town, then he burned rubber all the way to the border.
cry$tal's cousin, Pat Meth(eny)? (minus)1. I've never heard him screaming, just that damm Lexicon chorus swirling around.

I think 3 is good to because while maybe it should be a compressed tone his playing is very dynamic.

Alex Lifeson - 2 - Extremely BALLSY edgy crunchy crunch (Working Man is a great example)

YJM - 5 - Just liquid, sweet smooth tone, awesome aswell.

Angus Young - 1 - what can I say, its just pure ROUGH.

I guess the diff between Angus and YJM is THE difference
