Compressor

What are the benifits and drawbacks to adding a compressor to your signal path?

What is a good one to purchase?

Thanks,
Eric

Re: Compressor

A compressor, when used correctly, can add punch and sustain to your sound, especially clean tones. It can really help your guitar sound bigger and bolder. If set wrong, it can increase noise and produce a "pumping" sound, where you can hear the volume sort of jerk up and down. Like anything, play around with the settings to find what works best. Some compressors color the sound more than others, some are fairly neutral sounding - this is a matter of personal preference. Good ones to try are the Barber Tone Press, Aphex Punch Factory, Keely Compressor. I have an old Boss CS-2(or 3, can't remember), and while it sounds cool, it's pretty noisy.

Re: Compressor

If it is noticeable, it sounds bad. But if one's playing is sharp without one, it can take the sound to the next level.
