Compressors

Re: Compressors

MXR dynacomp has served me VERY well. With a tele through a bassman, the MXR just gives me that extra fullness and twang I want. They're also fairly simple to mod (Ross mod specs are available through the web). I haven't modded mine yet, but I hear its a world of difference, and I'm happy with it stock.

I've had good luck with the Boss CS-3 in the past as well, but I love the simplicity of the MXR

Re: Compressors

As someone who recently modded a Phase 90, I take exception to the "easy to mod" part. If you're the type who will poke around inside a pedal with a sodering iron, the BYOC compressor might be a better starting point than a recent Dyna Comp.

If your just a buy, plug, and play kinda guy, then I agree the Dyna Comp is the model of simplicity.

Re: Compressors

The Boss CS-3 can be good if you mod it. It doesn't change your tone if you dial it in right and it will compress the snot out of your signal if you want. At high compression levels it will be noisy though. I'm going to try further changes to it to see how much the sound improves with further mods. So far, it's been worth the $30 I paid for it, but mine was flawed when I bought it and it needed repair.

Re: Compressors

+1. The CS-3 is really nice, especially with a Monte Allums Opto Mod kit in it. This is the setup for you if you like to twiddle knobs, since it has twice as many as the Dyna Comp.

Re: Compressors

I use the DigiTech Main Squeeze. I think all compressors are capable of getting noisy, but the settings just have to be adjusted.

Re: Compressors

I like the morley compresion pedal. It worked well for me with a super strat into a bassman.

+2. get a used cs-3 + the opto mod and you'll get a really good compressor at a ridiculous price.

i usually use a comp for cleans to even up the dynamics. i accidentally found out that the cs-3 with opto mod actually tightens up and gives slightly more crunch and definition on the wound strings of my 7-string when i forgot to turn it off when playing in high gain. needless to say, the cs-3 is always on now.

I have a Opto mod CS-3 and a standard Monti mod CS-3. I personally thik that these are the best compressors I have yet used. the Opto mod in the Boss CS-3 in particular is STELLAR!!

Re: Compressors

I got the MXR SuperComp. Its basically a dynacomp but with an attack knob so its more adjustable. It can go from subtle to a nice squeeze...but not too extreme. So if your into a good subtle compression hit this one up, I think it was like $120 after tax or something.

Just for comparrison, it can get gilmours "another brick in the wall part II" compression, thats about as far as it will go...maybe a tad more. Remember gilmour used a dynacomp!

Re: Compressors

The Marshall ED1 is the best one I tried. WAY better sounding than the stock CS3, and cheaper. I love mine.

Re: Compressors

Keeley's comp's are great sounding, IMO. Just spend the x-tra loot, and get it right the first time.....

Re: Compressors

I think Gilmour used (uses?) two or three different compressors, sometimes with more than one going at the same time.

I beleive so too BUT his main compressor is the dynacomp and can get any of his compressed sounds.

www.gilmourish.com You'll notice the dynacomp everywhere! I'm too lazy to go check what others he had :)
