Condition of Duncan Pickups

I recently ordered a Hot Rail Set from Sam Ash through Amazon.com. The item said it was brand new factory sealed and I was pretty surprised at what I found inside. I just receive the package today and there are fingerprints and residue on the pickups and wires. The ends of the wires are already stripped too. The only thing sealed was the sides of the plastic casing with two pieces of tape.

Is this how Duncans normally come?

Re: Condition of Duncan Pickups

No. That's what happens when a music store takes the pickups out to test them or show them and puts them back and tapes the box back up calling it new. I would consider it a 'demo deal' or B-stock depending on who's fingerprints are all over it - Sam Ash or a customer's.

Re: Condition of Duncan Pickups

Item never even said anything about them being B stock or Demo item. It clearly said BRAND NEW FACTORY SEALED. What a bunch of pricks. I know things get dirty but when I spend $240 on a set of pickups and it is listed as brand new factory sealed, I expect it to be.

Re: Condition of Duncan Pickups

Sending them back? If you don't then this is now officially an OGT (Official Gripe Thread). lol

Re: Condition of Duncan Pickups

It's a scumbag move but it happens more often than most people think. Some guy takes his guitar into his local music store, has them install a Hot-Rod or some other set into his Epi L.P. because he doesn't know zilch about pickups or how to install them, he finds out that those pickups are not what he wanted & they don't make him play any better for some strange reason, so he goes back to the store....

Now, the guy that just charged him $200+ for the puppies and $75 for labor, charges him again to remove them, refunds half his money (if he's lucky), then he sticks them back in the boxes & re-sells them as brand new, either over the Internet or to the next kid who walks in with a Epi. L.P. & thinks some new humbuckers will turn him into some kind of a guitar god....

Re: Condition of Duncan Pickups

I would send these back. If you have trouble with the return, send me a PM. This is not how the pickups should come.

Re: Condition of Duncan Pickups

If the pickups are in good shape and can be cleaned up to look like new, see if Sam Ash will give you a 30% or even 50% refund.

They're a big company. They can afford it. And they might be willing.

Re: Condition of Duncan Pickups

First, if you have photos that would be very helpful. Many of Duncan's pickups come with pre-stripped wires. So right off the bat that could be nothing at all. Totally normal.

Second, I would love to have seen the fingerprints. I don't think the final package department are wearing gloves, but here is a possibility: If the fingerprints were at all hazy, whitish, chalky, etc, then it's a reaction to the glue. If you look around the bottom of the pickup, you should see some glue all around the border of the PCB. That's the glue that's holding the pickup in the cover.

So the way superglue works is, if there is any that isn't fully cured trapped inside, it will gas off, but also it will react to fingerprints (anyone remember something like this from Beverly Hills Cop?)

The point I'm making is that there could have been no fingerprints or perceived residue on the pickup when they packaged it, but THEN over the next day or so, a haze (with fingerprints) develops, and Duncan wouldn't even have been aware of it. Neither would Sam Ash for that matter. It very well could be a new in box pickup, as advertised.

lol! I also forgot to mention that the plastic case was all scuffed up and scratch marks on it. As soon as I started unboxing the item and inspecting it, I knew these things were used before at some point. Just bothers me knowing that I spend $240 and get something where I do not know where it has been. I should have the issue resolved and SamAsh has not been giving me any trouble so far. I am just going to send them back.

Re: Condition of Duncan Pickups

Well, I have seen scratched boxes on new pickups, just because the store stacks them all up. If they get shuffled around after shipping, it scratches the plastic. Still, you aren't happy about this, and you spent $$ on it. I would still pursue some sort of refund/replacement.
