cone rub

DankStar

Her Little Mojo Minion
selling a speaker. dude asked me to push on cone to identify if has cone rub. I never touch that part of a speaker.

safe to do? should I even bother? to me that's like asking someone to go through a head with a voltmeter to make sure it doesn't have a short somewhere. I had the speaker in an amp, it worked - for me that seems like enough evidence it works.

thanks

Re: cone rub

It's perfectly safe to give a guitar speaker a bit of a push. A cranked amp will push it further than you will. Just apply even pressure and don't touch the dust cap. If you're worried you can't apply pressure evenly find a round object larger than the dust cap (like a sauce pan lid) and gently push with that. If you feel a rub, that's bad.

Re: cone rub

I say you tell him that if he wants to find out if it has a Cone rub, then let him do that himself. I wouldn't risk possibly damaging the speaker, then in result making it worthless.

Hell, if he's asking you to do something that could possibly destroy any chance of selling it, I wouldn't sell it to him. Bottom line. That's just stupid, for the lack of a better term, especially if you don't feel comfortable doing that.

It's possible to give it a little push, but don't make any significant difference to it.

Re: cone rub

For the record, this is not likely to damage the speaker, and is a common way to "tire-kick" a speaker. If the driver has been very badly over-powered and burnt out, the cone can get bound up and will not move in and out smoothly. Gently pushing in on the cone will give some small reassurance that the speaker isn't completely fried. You aren't going to damage a speaker unless you go gorilla on it.

Sometimes in order to sell something you have to humor the eccentricities of the buyer.
