Re: Confession: Who Likes The Peter Green Mod?

Speaking of Jimmy Herring, I'm really into the middle position on a Gibson, with the neck volume backed off a bit. Like he says, it sounds like a little thicker version of the bridge.

Yup! My one of my favorite tones on a Gibson guitar, and my favorite tone on a jazz bass too!

That tone can actually be really col with an OOP mod because then you are rolling back into being in phase as you roll one pickup down

Re: Confession: Who Likes The Peter Green Mod?

I've never had an instrument with it, but sounds cool to me. Middle positions can definitely be befuddling. My Carvin (with is LP-ish) is cool the way it is but sounds like something clever.

Re: Confession: Who Likes The Peter Green Mod?

One prominent LP guy said that stock middle position can give you the best lead sound on an LP. Rolled off tone on the bridge and adjust neck volume and tone to taste. After reading that, I do it with every 2-HB guitar I have. Maybe have a second LP with the the reversed phase middle pickup or have a switch to go between normal and OOP sounds, by giving you the option of reversing the middle pos. phase by the wire method. Don't know but maybe you can do it with a PP pot.

Re: Confession: Who Likes The Peter Green Mod?

Sorry to disappoint the OP but that isn't the Peter Green mod that ya tried!
PG's Pickups were MAGNETICALLY out of phase (which can be a pretty cool sound, depending on how mismatched the coils are) but what is being described is ELECTRICALLY out of phase(rarely any good IMHO).

These are Passive pickups we're talking about here NOT actively powered ElectroMagnats so it's impossible to change their polarity at the flick-of-a-Switch

Try The Peter Green mod if you've tried these others & not liked 'em -remember it's pretty permanent & not something you can change mid-solo (unless you have VERY patient fans!)

Re: Confession: Who Likes The Peter Green Mod?

Electrically out of phase and magnetically out of phase are functionally the same thing unless noisy single coils are brought into the mix. Their is no difference tonally.

The signal only has 2 options.....in or out of phase. Irrespective of whether the leads or the polarity of the magnet is the cause, the signal is not altered save for making it go one way vs the other.
There are still open debates about the interference of magnetic fields.....the only thing that could cause the two methods to be any different. But a quick check of 2 typical alnico magnets shows that they only start to physically become reactive at about 1/2" distance. By the time you've got to the 4 1/2 inches spread of the typical Gibson spacing it is doubtful that any field interaction would go beyond the place in the middle where it intersects - which is not where either pickup is sensing movement from.

Re: Confession: Who Likes The Peter Green Mod?

I like the tone, but not better than the normal Les Paul middle switch position. The middle switch position is my instant "clean switch" (or you might say my instant "Fender switch") on a dual-humbucker guitar. I don't use it often, and never when playing live, but I like to have it there for when I'm messing around and I'm too lazy to take out a Strat...especially since I normally mess around on low-headroom amps in my studio (15W Ampeg Jet II, or a 12W vintage '68 Princeton Reverb).

If I primarily played lead, I might feel differently. I would also probably wire in the option if I was ever doing mods to my Paul. I've had it with totally stock electronics since 2004, though, so I don't see that happening any time soon.

I've had it on one if my SG's for a few years now.

I don't care for it on cleaner unaffected tones because it's too thin sounding; but I find it sounds great with truckloads of gain and/or compression. When highly compressed, it cuts through everything in all its fat, nasally glory.
