confused about grounding

HEllo -

I am getting ready to rewire one of my les pauls as my first project involving wiring. I have been practicing with the soldering iron for a bit now. I am still a drop confused about grounding.

I understand the green and bare wires all get soldered individually to pot tops. THe red and white wires all get soldered together (for each pickup) and wrapped with electrical tape. Also - the bridge and the back of the switch all get soldered to pot tops? The left lug of each pot will get bent back onto the top and soldered there. Finally, I believe that bare wire should be used to connect all the pot tops and that should lead to one of the lugs on the output jack?

Is this correct? Also - do I need to use bare wire for the grounding of the pot tops?

No need for bare wire and insolated decreases short opportunites.
Most of what you have said sounds correct, but since you sound liek you are wiring form scratch, I would suggest star grounding- All grounds cometogeter in one place and not a bad idea to shield while you are at it-
Search the archives and google as there is tons of info on this-

it did help a bit but Ihave another question. I have looked at the schematic listed below your post numerous times, but it still leeves me a bit confused about grounding.

Assuming I do not shield the cavity - utilizing star grounding - is it correct to bring every wire that should be attached to a ground to the top of one pot - and then take that pot and attach it to the wire that comes from the bridge?

If so, how do the grounds where lugs are bent back and soldered on each pot get connected into the grounding system? That is what i thought the wiring of each pot top to pot top and then attach one pot top to the bridge wire accomplished.

Yep assuming you do not shield the cavity, all grounds including the back of the pots and the bridge wire have to come together somewhere-
