confused on 5 way switch HH wiring. HELP!

Alright, i just got a new 5 way for my jackson, and its the kind that has the eight terminals in a row. I cant get a fender style switch because it has too large of a profile to fit. here is my problem, this diagram is what im trying to use - http://www.seymourduncan.com/website/support/schematics/2hum_vol_tone_5way-w-split.html

the problem is the diagram has the fender type switch with 4 terminals on each side.. i dont know how that converts. there are numbers on the side of my switch, it reads 1 2 3 0 0 1 2 3. first of all i dont even know which way it should face.. the 1 towards the neck or the other way? if anyone can help me i would appreciate it so much. i cant find a diagram anywhere, and i dont know what to do. thanks in advance.

also, both of my pickups are SD and they have the 4 conductor wiring.

Re: confused on 5 way switch HH wiring. HELP!

alright i figured out which terminals are which, so i have it wired (i think) correctly. now this, the split JB doesnt sound anything like a strat, more like a Jb that lacks a little volume and just sounds a little weaker.. i saw a thread a while back that said the outside coils sound the best when split.. so how would i do that?

if you could, is it possible for me to do the neck the same? on the diagram from the SD site the only time the neck is split is when its used with the bridge.. dont know why you would want that, but i would rather have it so i could use it by itself. if i have to sacrifice one of the positions to do that, i would. basically im looking for bridge, split bridge, split neck, and neck in whatever order. thanks.

Hey Suis; Welcome to the forum, btw. :)

Are you saying that you'ld never want neck & bridge together? Thats cool, if thats what you want, but you'ld be giving up a pretty valuable sound, IMHO.

Let me know, and I'll see what I can come up with. Shouldn't be too difficult.

yes, thats what im saying. i will sacrifice it to have those 4 combinations i listed. my style doesnt really need it.. besides i never cared for the sound. the only thing i remotely liked is playing chords clean. thanks a bunch!

Re: confused on 5 way switch HH wiring. HELP!

Ok, thats easy - but with one little "quirk". (Which I'll get to later.)

Wire the switch like this:

1: neck black
2: blank
3: bridge black
0: out to volume control
0: blank
1: neck red/white
2: ground
3: bridge red/white

This will give you:

1. neck
2. neck split
3. dead (thats the quirk)
4. bridge split
5. bridge

I'll see what I can do about that "quirk". ;)

oh, well thats perfectly fine. if it actually works as a "kill switch" thats even greater haha :) thanks so much for your help!

Uh . . . yeah . . . I designed it that way. :laugh2:

Dats da ticket! ;)

Re: confused on 5 way switch HH wiring. HELP!

alright it works, but is that using the outer coils for the split? because it sounds the same as earlier. The first time i wired it (incorrectly) one of the middle positions sounded exactly like a strat.. i dont know how it was wired but i thought that if i got it all worked out that this is the sound i could get. hopefully that will fix it. i have no idea how to wire that by the way.. thanks again!

Re: confused on 5 way switch HH wiring. HELP!

That should give you the "stud" coils when split. (Which is the standard way in SD diagrams.)

If you take the #2 terminal, thats second from the bottom, thats labelled "ground", and run it to the "zero" terminal labelled "out to volume control" instead, that will give you the adjustable coils when split.

Re: confused on 5 way switch HH wiring. HELP!

1: neck black
2: blank
3: bridge black
0: ground
0: blank
1: neck red/white
2: volume control
3: bridge red/white

i just wired it like that, only the 2 and 4 positons work. all the rest are dead. there something else that i was supposed to do? thanks again, sorry i dont know what im doing.

Re: confused on 5 way switch HH wiring. HELP!

Sorry suis; I might not have been clear. I meant like this:

Re: confused on 5 way switch HH wiring. HELP!

What about this:

1 Neck blank
2 bridge blank
3 neck red/white
0 out to volume control
Rest: blank

That would give you this:
1 neck HB
2 neck & Bridge HB
3 Bridge HB
4 BridgeHB & neck split
5 neck split

or vice versa.

Re: confused on 5 way switch HH wiring. HELP!

but i specifically want 4 combinations. the bridge, b/split, neck, and n/split. i dont care if i have a 5th or not.

i think i wired it correctly this time, but the split bridge still doesnt have that twang like i got when i first tried to wire it.. i dont know if i can even remember how i wired it.

right now its wired like this-

1: neck black
2: blank
3: bridge black
0: wire from 2
0: blank
1: neck red/white
2: volume control, wire to 0
3: bridge red/white

i didnt have much spare wire, so i cut one about half an inch long and soldered it from the #2 at the bottom and soldered the other end to the top #0. technically i assume that works fine?

I think i know why:
You possibly used the coil which is closer to the bridge.
Now you have the inner coil, when splitted.
That means less twang.

Re: confused on 5 way switch HH wiring. HELP!

no offense, but have you read any of the previous posts? after i figured out how to wire it correctly i wanted to use the outer coils instead of the inner for that reason. artie was nice enough to provide the diagrams for that. if you know how to wire it so the outer coils will be used please tell! thanks.

Re: confused on 5 way switch HH wiring. HELP!

Ok, I think this does it:

btw - where you see the red lines, refers to both the red and white together.

That should give you:

1. neck
2. neck split
3. dead
4. bridge split
5. bridge

And when either pup is selected, its the outside coils. (Assuming you mount the pups as shown - screw terminals out.)

Let me know if this works for you. ;)

Re: confused on 5 way switch HH wiring. HELP!

Yes, thats how its currently configured. The neck split sounds good, but the bridge (JB) still doesnt do it for me.. it has some single twang, but it still has a tone like a humbucker. Maybe it doesnt get any better than that?

Re: confused on 5 way switch HH wiring. HELP!

Possibly. I've got a JB in my Patriot, and its all configured for a split/parallel switch. I just haven't done it yet 'cause I wanted to hear how it sounded in that guitar. I think it was Lew who said once, that the JB split wasn't a favorite tone for him, but that the JB in parallel was.

I'll see if I can get the split/series/parallel switch installed in mine this weekend, and then we can go from there.
