Confused on ohmage on the speaker outs of a mid90s (?) CARVIN PROBASS 150 1x15"combo

OK, so got me a lil craigslist score - a surprisingly awesome-sounding and punchy (albeit obscenely heavy, lol) Carvin ProBass 150, presumed from the mid90s (can't find it in catalogs, this being the 150W 1x15" version)... not at all bad for $150. Unlike a GODAWFUL gk backline 210 that I sold for a buck a watt, very much worth every penny.

However, on to the "problem", not that there is one sound-wise, just not sure how to read this and avoid messing something up...

The back says:
100 watts 8ohm
150 watts 4ohm

...but only has two speaker outs, both labelled 8ohm. One is occupied by the built-in 1x15". Huuuh????

After scratching our heads for a bit, we put the 2nd speaker out into a 300watt 4x12" Marshall (pleaaaaase spare me the "don't risk your guitar cab" crap, 4x 75watt celestions hold up just fine, and I got the POS for all of $100 so who cares either way). Having to choose between 16ohm mono, 2x 8ohm stereo, and 4ohm mono, we plugged it into the latter. SOUNDED AWESOME. Waaaay more mid punch, but with all the low-end growl of the 15". Also casually annihilated the guitarist's 400w amp into a 2x 400 watt stack. Dunno how, but them Carvin watts are LOUD, none of that modern optimistic uprating crap.

Makes for a killer budget "stack" of 1x15 + 4x12 for a sum total of $250. Hellyeah!!!

However, is this the correct way to wire it up?? We were going by the assumption that the amp somehow switches to 4ohm when both 8ohm speaker outs are used, since it mentions 4ohm operation for the maximum 150watts output, but supplies no 4ohm speaker outs. Are we right????????????????

I'm not familiar with that specific amp, but the very common practice is to have the two 'out' jacks wired in parallel. It is intended to have the internal speaker @ 8 ohms and a second speaker (or cab) also at 8 ohms. The two parallel 8 ohm speakers result in a total impedance of 4 ohms to the amp.
It was not intended to use an 8 ohm internal and a 4 ohm external, which is what you've described. This results in a total impedance of 2.7 ohms. As you have described the cab, the only proper way to use it in conjunction with the internal is to use one of the stereo 8 ohm connections, in which case only 2 of the 4 speakers will play.

The issue is not a concern for damage to the speakers, but to the amp itself. If it is a solid state amp the risk of damage is much greater than if it is a tube amp, but neither is recommended.
