Considering a speaker swap, please help

Re: Considering a speaker swap, please help

Speakers are tough to recommend, because two players could have used the same set, but play different amps and then throw in different guitars and with differently voiced pickups. So difficult, and all those things skew perception.
Generally, the manufactures description is fairly accurate although a little broad. I wouldn't contest anyone here's help though, lot's of well informed yet objective opinions for sure.

Interesting, my 4x12 is running Swamp Thangs and Wizards and I don't find it to be missing mids at all; the Wizard is almost 'cupped hands' middy to my ears. Or are you referring to the Swamp Thangs, which definitely do NOT push the midrange.

I should note that I am using them as dual 2x12 mono pairs in my cab with dual amplifiers, which means I can EQ each speaker separately. That may have some bearing on my impressions...

The dual amping may be part of the reason, I'm also referring to a V30 type midrange, the wiz by comparison are really balanced. I'm using a T75/V30 combo now, suits what I'm going for better, but I still occasionally miss the ST growl.

And yeah, speaker recommendations, pfft, so many variables, my Boogie pretty much hates 65's, but my Butcher loves them.

Agree 100%. I always TRY to stay out of Speaker Posts for this very reason.
With That Said.....
The Wizard/Governor is one of my favorite combos, but neither one by itself is my favorite Emi.
The Wizard is definitely a Loud and Bright speaker, but all you can do is give a speaker a try, and see what YOU hear.
I thing you could make any amp sound good with access to an Eminence:
Texas Heat
Tonker
Red White & Blues
C-Rex
good luck

Re: Considering a speaker swap, please help

I had the swamps in a Buzz Bomb. Still torn between the th and st, should probably just go back to the swamps since I'm familiar, idk.

Re: Considering a speaker swap, please help

Maybe I should just mix them, the TH and ST that is.

Re: Considering a speaker swap, please help

swampy is louder. Also, remember that at gigs they usually only mic one speaker so there is very little benefit in mixing. Better to go one or the other IMO. Simple is always best.

Re: Considering a speaker swap, please help

Welp, I want to turn my amp louder, have less fizz and not sweat too much lugging the thing around. Texas Heat it is. Its also cheaper by $15;)

Re: Considering a speaker swap, please help

texan wont make your amp louder. But it will sound fat when you crank the volume knob.

Re: Considering a speaker swap, please help

That's what I mean, crank my amp louder. The Tex is less efficient so I can open the amp up at higher volumes.

Re: Considering a speaker swap, please help

Just one more question, and thanks to all who have replied. How does the mid range character differ in these two speakers. They seem quite similar except for the magnet size, I'm just curious. Thanks again:)

Custom:) . Hey thanks, you've been very helpful sir. You know, I have been thinking and over thinking this, but I miss the swamps. And I think they fit me best as a lead player in my band. They had clarity and definition with assertiveness and authority.

Re: Considering a speaker swap, please help

After about two years with my Twin I swapped out the Jensen C12K's for a set of Texas Heats. Oh yes, good thing, what the hell has Fender been thinking? Obviously they are choosing speakers based on the bottom line rather than tone. Duh, of course they have. My take on it is that there are great speakers that are very expensive and then there are mediocre speakers that don't cost that much. But, if you want a great sounding speaker that is reasonably priced (with the exception of Celestion English made) Eminence is it bar none.

Re: Considering a speaker swap, please help

I took Gibson175's advice when I bought a twin and it was too brittle & harsh, he suggested the heats. They are awesome. Mellow top end, great mid and lots of bass. Mine aren't even close to broken in yet and they sound fantastic. Also, Zzounds will sell you a pair for 130 bucks with free shipping.

Re: Considering a speaker swap, please help

Glad you guys are having a good experience with Eminence, and with their T.H.
I hate to make general statements about something as subjective as speakers...BUT the Jensen C12K is about the Worst/Harsh speaker I have demoed.
Anyway.....glad you guys can forget about speakers, enjoy your Amps/Tone, and get on with becoming a "better" and happier player.
best

Re: Considering a speaker swap, please help

No the Texas Heat is going to have some sizzle and high mids. You probably need to look at something darker like a RWB or Cannabis Rex or something.

Re: Considering a speaker swap, please help

Gotta disagree respectfully about the high mids and the heats. I don't hear that at all. As far as sizzle, it is by no means dull but the top end is mellow. I find the mids to be more "thick". When I think high mids, I think Celestion and specifically V30's, which these speakers do not sound like at all. Like I said, not being argumentative, just stating what I hear.

Hey you're entitled to your opinion. I'm just stating what I hear from the Texas Heat installed in the 1x12 cab that I've been playing through for 2 years.

Re: Considering a speaker swap, please help

I suppose it also depends on what amp you are using them with and what kind of music. I'm using them in a twin with a strat with either clean or pretty mild OD tones.
