Considering getting a Splawn amp

Hey guys,
I have heard been really curious about these for a long time, the sound sound clips i have heard are pretty good and i have yet to hear someone not like them, but then again not to many people have played one so.... Anyways, it seems to be the type of amp im looking for and is in my price range but i have found out some things first. One thing ive noticed about hot rodded Marshall style amps is that they often times sound pretty compressed and lack the open tone i love. Im not one to be anti-compression altogether, but i NEED to hear subtlties of my guitars and playing style. I think Dual Rectos sound WAY to compressed for example. The Budda Superdrive 80 i had on the other hand was the pollar opposite, i swear to you, with the gain cranked it still had the dynamics it had on the clean channel...just really thick and fat....it was kinda scary... anyways im not looking for that level of non-compressedness (Wow, what good English i have) but just not nearly as much as with so many of the mesas and super hot rodded marshalls ive heard. Also i really dont want every guitar i plug in to sound like its EVH's, as much as i love that sound, im looking to get some different sounds depending on the guitar, amp settings, etc. Finally, which one should i get, im guessing the Pro Mod would have more head room etc. and the Quick Rod would be more midrangey and would break up easier? Why is the quick rod cheaper anyways? I know there are a few of you who are huge Splawn supporters, but PLEASE PLEASE answer my questions as objectively as possible, because if i do in fact get the amp i would be spending a great deal of money on something i have never played.

Thanks guys,
Max

Re: Considering getting a Splawn amp

i bought the quick rod because i'm an "edhead"....that being said, i love it! there's no better hot rodded marshall out there for the money. effects loop/master volume/2 overdrives/clean channel/solo boost...it's great.

that being said, i think the clips on their website are very close to what these things sound like when you bring them home.

just by reading your descrition though it sounds like you may want a pro mod. the pro mod is more "modern sounding" and the quick rod is more "plexi/brown sounding".

i can't really get into compression becuse things sound different through different rooms/settings/guitars/etc...

I too bought a Splawn Quick Rod because I'm an obsessed VH fan, even though as you can tell by my clip, I don't really sound like him at all.
Heres my clip, the playing is shltty and I'm new to home recording, but you get the idea:

Anyway, I've played for years with a super high headroom 5150 setup through 2 4-12's. I play gigs ALOT, I mean almost every week, 45 weeks last year.

I've played 2 gigs with my Splawn and I couldn't be happier. It has the warmest sound and at the same time just screams too. The bottom end on this thing is unreal so tight and chunky and smooth, no flubby crap like a boogie or something.

I can't imagine the Pro-Mod would sound bad, just because all of Scotts stuff is so high-quality. Seriously you couldn't go wrong getting one his amps and in 10 years it would be like having a first year Soldano when this guys gets big and his amps are $3000+ you'll have a bonafide collectors item that sounds incredible.
