I stopped into my favorite local music shop earlier tonight and in the course of a conversation with the guy who does amp and guitar repair, he was mentioning he's done some very Dumble-like amp mods with old Fender and Traynor tube amps. His opinion was that the best ones to mod are CBS-era Fender silver-faces (as they aren't regarded as very collectible and a fair amount of caps and such would be replaced anyway) and any old Traynor tube combos or heads from the 60's/70's if you ever come across them.

So anyhoooooo, I'd like to solicit your opinions and thoughts on this subject, what would be the best old Fenders to subject to some Dumble-izing? I know I'll probably NEVER have $10K to shell out for a Dumble, but the idea of a hot-rodded Fender or Traynor at a fraction of the price sounds VERY appetizing!

SF Fenders are modding machines. I recommend you send your amp to Andy Fuchs of Fuchs Amplification and he'll mod for a good price.

I'd agree about the silverface Fenders, I've head a couple modded that sounded great. Though, I will say a blackface Princeton that had been dumble-ized is an amazing sound I'm lucky enough to have been present for, but there is the little issue of collectability . . .

No idea about the Traynors, never heard, seen, or attempted to create on that's modded.

A SF Bassman would be a good candidate for this type of mod. Last I
checked they could be had for around $350? The old Traynors are real
good to. A little harder to find, But may even be cheaper? I think I
would look for a Traynor 1st. Reason being... Everybody knows what a
Bassman sounds like (Stock) The Traynor is more a mystory amp. You
can Hot Rod it all the way and most won't be the wiser.

i thought fuchs isnt accepting amps to mod any more - too busy building his incredible amps ... i could be wrong though .. check his website

.....I would highly suggest that you actually "define" what it is you're after...

For the most part, it's a rare occasion that it is possible to "duplicate" most higher end amps without extensive changes......(in other words, you're not going to get a *umble out of a SF Fender....)...you can get close, if that's good enough for you.

That's a delicious thought. If perchance one day I encounter an old Traynor in decent condition, I'd HAPPILY have this guy Dumble-ize it, then get someone to do an airbrush of an owl's face on the grille. If not, an SF Fender Deluxe or Princeton might be good too.

What I'm looking for would be primarily a backup amp to my YCV-40 and it'd be kind of cool to get at least close to the Dumble tone without haviong to go in debt the rest of me life or having to deal with Mr Dumble's, shal we say, rather unpredictable psychological state. If it gets at least close to the Dumble sound witha seweet overdrive, I'd be VERY happy!.
