Contentment with one guitar?

Re: Contentment with one guitar?

Only one guitar??? Sounds like a few wives are turning up the heat. I don't know if life is possible with only one guitar, not with the choices today in guitars, pickups, magnets, etc. Lots of temptation out there for us weak-willed mortals. Besides, that puts a lot of wear (fret & otherwise) on a guitar. Much better to rotate them & keep them looking new (remember this argument for later). What's the point of having just one? If guitars & music are one of the great loves in your life, why not enrich your time on this planet with a wonderful variety. Don't want to die thinking you missed something. And don't all the great guitarists have huge collections? Geez, we ordinary guys should be able to have a few ourselves.

That being said, if I had to pick a favorite, it would be my black Sheraton 355 with a '59n & a C5, with the 21-sound Jimmy Page system. It can pretty much do it all & do it well. But its so much more fun to have a harem.

Re: Contentment with one guitar?

Ok, this may sound like Im looking for justification for G.A.S, but honestly no, Im asking this genuinely. How many of you (especially those of you who play out) are content with one electric guitar?
If so, what kind of guitar do you use?
Do you play multiple styles?

Im kind of thinking that one LP, one strat and a tele could cover everything, but how to pick just 1??

Thanks for the input.

i seriously could be content to using one modded American Strat.... a HSH American Standard/Series...

or the other option is my Godin as it is HSH, and has a Piezo trem bridge...

either one of those i could get by with.... but i prefer back ups for my back ups....

Re: Contentment with one guitar?

I have one guitar and it serves me well....I know every little quirk it has,

There is an old saying and it can apply to guitars as well...."Heed the man who has but one gun...he is likely to know how to use it."

true... i've been searching for my Blackie.... or EVH Frankie style that i could say is my main axe i want to try and use for almost everything... but i have 22 solid bodies or so... and parts to put together a pile more home made ones... i still have yet to find The One... my American Standard strat from 1988 comes dam close....

Re: Contentment with one guitar?

This is the aspect of electric guitar that I really hate. For the most part, I find that guitarists are more interested in aquiring gear than learning to play the guitar. Other musicians don't fret (pun not intended) about having every kind of voice in the planet, they only want to nail their instrument. Terms like "GAS" and threads like "What pedal should I buy next" are only obsessive consumer behaviors. Stop concentrating on gear and play the guitar!

But which one? And through which amp?

;>)

Re: Contentment with one guitar?

For 15 years I owned just one guitar: a bone stock American Standard Strat. I made it work for everything from jazz to metal with the help of pedals. Then I got the urge to try a Les Paul and I got hooked on humbuckers. I eventually ended up buying and selling all kinds of guitars, trying dozens of different pickups, etc. Recently I have scaled back to the "vintage" Les Paul / Strat set up with just two guitars (actually a Heritage and a Carvin).

I get serious GAS all the time, and I would love to have a wall full of guitars to stare at, but I get overwhelmed when I have too many choices. A couple of trusty axes with unique functions is all I need. ****, I wish I knew how to silence that Gold Top Les Paul that keeps calling my name!!!

Re: Contentment with one guitar?

BLASPHEMER!!!!

No, I could get by with just one, as long as it was a good Les Paul. I'd be rewiring it about every other day, tho!!!.

Re: Contentment with one guitar?

Well, if I could only have my Epi LP special, I would be very happy. The only reason I'd get other guitars would be for different looks. Different sounds isn't too much of a concern to me.

Re: Contentment with one guitar?

I'm content with just one.

Fender 60th anniversary MIM Strat with an Invader in the bridge position and Pearly Gates in the neck spot.

Re: Contentment with one guitar?

had something like 14 guitars layiing around including 3 Les Pauls, a Strat, a Tele, an Ibanez RG 550 and a few others including a couple of acoustics.

I really only played the Les Pauls. My go to guitar is a LP Std. Once you find your voice it is hard to stray from it.

:headbang::werd: to your mama!

I don't think I've ever felt closer to you Robert ;)

Re: Contentment with one guitar?

Moose, I've been playing through a particularly twangy and bright amp for the past week, and yeah, a LP with the proper pups (and the proper electronics) can easily pull of pretty convincing Tele tones, and almost even strat tones (although not quite there - not quacky enough).

Ehhhh... I dunno about that so much.

Though...

Jimmy Page sold a helluvalotta Les Pauls playing a Tele!!!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Part of it is that I tend to play a bit differently on different rides... put a strat in my hands or a 335... different things are gonna come out. Granted, it all sounds like "me" to a large degree...but it doesn't.

Between alternate tunings & a need for different tones I can't ever see having just ONE single guitar. I'd need at least an LP and a Tele to cover most bases, not to mention acoustics...

Studio is a whole different thing. Yeah, one or two GOOD guitars is all 'ya need... but really... when making a real record it's NICE to have 'options' on hand. Too many layers of Paul's stack up & it all goes to muddy mush... too many 'strat' tracks & it starts getting clangy... variety is key.

Can't have 'just one'.

Nope.

Not EVER.

Re: Contentment with one guitar?

I'm really happy with my only 'pro' guitar, the RG on my picture and signature. Only thing I can't handle with it it's tuning switches. That's where my cheapo Epi comes into play, and that happens very rarely if ever. I always flirt with the idea of buying an Ibanez SZ or a nice LP clone, but I always end up realizing I won't get anything I'm not having already with the RG, and that the only flaws in the way I sound or play are my fault. I think I sound like one of the mot satisfied guys on the board, despite having quite a humble setup!

I'm not happy with just one. One cannot do everything. At minimum, I confine myself to a Strat and a LP style guitar each.

Re: Contentment with one guitar?

Remember, I said I tend to play only one of my guitars.

I didn't say I owned only one.

Re: Contentment with one guitar?

For me a Strat is THE stuff.

H-H, H-S-S or H is my preference... Can make alot happen with that :)
