Converting a C5 to CC?

I want to try a Custom Custom to see how it would sound in my Les Paul, I have the C5 in there now I love the output I get with the pup but sometimes I think it sounds too dark.

I have a Pearly Gates bridge pup can I just take that magnet out and slip it into the C5, I know the PGB mag is a A2 but does it have the same Gauss levels as a real CC A2 magnet would use....does this matter at all?

Re: Converting a C5 to CC?

Gauss levels do matter some, but you can manipulate them a bit with:

1) Some neodymium disk mags facing each other in a vise (to make sure the A2 is full charged);

2) A strong (ceramic or A8) magnet (to slightly weaken the A2 after full charging by holding it against the A2 N-to-N and then S-to-S for a fraction of a second;

3) Polarity tester (to make sure you have the right poles facing each other between the disk mags in the vice -- and between the A8 or ceramic andt he A2).

Probably you'll just want the A2 fully charged in the CC since it's a darker wind but a slight weakening of the A2 will give it more of a vintage flavor and clarity.

Assuming you have a vise, all the above would cost you about $30-40.

Re: Converting a C5 to CC?

I can't speak to Gauss levels, but I did the opposite a few years back (switched the A2 from my CC into a JB and vice versa to make a C5). The main effect was that the (now) C5 had less mids, but was similar in output. BTW a JB with an A2 sounds great.

Re: Converting a C5 to CC?

Well I chickened out couldnt bring my self to tear open the PGb, instead I tried something different with the PG to make it less bright in my Les Paul. I set all the pole pieces flush with the bobbin and set the pup height to 1/16" what that did for me was take away the harsh highs and thinness on the upper register of the neck I was getting and by keeping it close to the strings gave it some power and girth, it still has a nice presence to it.

Oh well so much for the C5 to CC conversion I think I will keep the PGb in for now so far it sounds the way I want it to sound!
