Convincing my second guitarist to use a louder amp - suggestions?

Our next gig is on December 16. My second guitarist has a bass combo, and it's not going to work. I have a Blues Junior III. I keep on nagging the other guitarist to borrow his friend's guitar amp, which is much larger and louder than mine. I know that he can always key in the volume so that it's quieter than the Blues Junior, but because I'm the lead and he's the rhythm, he still wants to use his bass amp.

I keep telling him that loudness is part of the vibe of prog rock. Any advice on how to get him to upgrade?

You won't until he hears a recording of how it really sounds. He needs a proper guitar amp. Just mic him up for this one and be done with it.

Bring him an amp and tell him he has no choice but to use it.

Re: Convincing my second guitarist to use a louder amp - suggestions?

+1 about him needing to hear a recording of everyone and figuring out thats he is too quiet

Maybe he is trying to copy A Perfect Circle.

AFAIK, they also had a bass amp in stereo with the guitar amp - that's excl. the bass guitar rig of sexy Paz Lenchantin.

Is it a matter of taste...or of price? Is he perhaps avoiding realizing that he really could use a halfstack, because then hed be GASing for it hard?

:18:That's funny. I use a Bassman, in fact 2 of them 1 clean 1 crunch. What bass amp is he using?

It's a better guitar amp than an actual bass amp.

I too have a kick arse '66 Bassman.

Turn everything up and tell him you can't hear him...

Female bassists are the hottest female musicians, IMO.

Dang she's cute!

Re: Convincing my second guitarist to use a louder amp - suggestions?

My advice: You are not ready to gig.

Option two: New rhythm guitarist

Re: Convincing my second guitarist to use a louder amp - suggestions?

That^^^^

Just let him try your Blues Junior at a rehearsal and he might like it so much he will get a guitar amp.

Can you rent? I used to rent a Peavey Classic 50 from a local mom and pop music store when I was in my band. I think it was $10/day.

This is not necessarily true. Sometimes you CAN'T match because of power/control disparity.

but because I'm the lead and he's the rhythm, he still wants to use his bass amp.

This has nothing to do with it

This is also BS of the highest order. Loudness is loudness. Too loud is too loud. It sounds like crap. Too quiet is too quiet. It sounds like crap. Poor balance of loudness is also crap. Whether you play 50db or 150db, the sound needs to be relatively balanced. And if you play too loud, your "vibe" will be SUCK whether Prog, Metal, Jazz, or Country.

Re: Convincing my second guitarist to use a louder amp - suggestions?

What Aceman said. I would like to add to that.

If he is too quiet, even with a dedicated bass player, as soon as you go to play leads, guess what happens? The bottom falls out and he may as well be standing there playing air guitar. When that happens, the momentum of the song suffers. If you're the only guitar player, that's one thing. But with 2, the rhythm player has to be there to fill it out.
