Cool, Cool, Cool Rails!

I loved the Vintage Rails between my two CR's, but I didn't like the drop in volume when I switched to it by itself. So I had an idea . . . and just happened to have another Cool Rails (bridge) sitting on the shelf. I stuck it in the middle and wired it in parallel. The CR and VR are voiced similar, and it worked great. Has the same basic tonality of the VR but with a bit more volume.

Its funny how things work out. It appears as though my favorite guitar setup is 3 Cool Rails in a Strat. Even though they're the same pickup, all the sounds are different. In the same ballpark, but different. I have this set up so that I can have any combo, and the only one I'm not crazy about is the neck and bridge CR's on together. Just a tad too much midrange quack. On the other hand, all three on at once is my favorite guitar tone. Very Mark Knopfler-ish.

I think this one's a "keeper". :)

Re: Cool, Cool, Cool Rails!

what pots do you use along with them? 250k or 500k ? I heard 500k sounds great with rails but I havent got the time to give it a try.

Re: Cool, Cool, Cool Rails!

I use 250's with mine. Then again, I use 250's in all my guitars. It just matches my setup. SS into studio monitors. If I was running a true guitar amp with 12's, I might do differently.

There's something to be said for using the same pickup in all positions... when it's a really good pickup. Variations on a good sound that are all usable.

True, true. As soon as I get the Distortion bridge for my Patriot, I'll have three guitars with matching pups. And they all sound great.

Re: Cool, Cool, Cool Rails!

i was gonna do a three Hot Rails thing in my Fender as an experiment and decided against it but I can totally see how these kinds of set-ups would work. I mean Fender and Gibson were using the same model pups in all their slots for years, right?
