Cool neck pup to match the fred

NOT PAF Pro or Paf joe. Doesnt really matter bassy or trebly, hot or medium output, as long as it has a unique sound that balances fairly well.

Re: Cool neck pup to match the fred

The Air Norton and the Evolution neck are the only two DMZ medium output pups besides the PAF Pro/Joe that'll match in terms of output, and they're pretty close to the Fred in output. Other than that, you have your DMZ PAF types (Air Classic, PAF, PAF Classic, Virtual PAFs), the Bluesbucker, the EJ Custom, and the Humbucker From Hell.

If you're looking for unique stuff, I'd suggest you go for either the Bluesbucker, EJ Custom, or Humbucker From Hell, but I don't really know how well you'll like those. If you'd like me to describe how these pickups sound in general, I could, or you could look on DiMarzio's website. I can find some sound clips of the HFH and the Bluesbucker. I don't have any clips of the EJ Custom, but it was made to sound like those old Filtertron pickups found in Gretsch guitars. So, with the right stuff, I guess you could have Malcolm Young's tone.

Evo neck! :headbang:
probably hotter in output than the fred(it's made to balance with an Evo bridge so i guess that's quite obvious) but very cool sound on it's own. More of a rhythm pup , with a very distinct roar on chords and some cool harmonics that usually don't come out of a neck pup. Can be used for smoother less aggressive lead playing also but imo it excels at being the rhythm counter part of an Evo bridge. Of course it's super-tight and clear so you'll never get problems with mud. Pretty balanced imo and just a killer pup if you ask me.

I;d go for an Air Norton in the neck. I know you dont want a PAF Pro, but it does match the FRED really well and sounds great.

Could describe the blues bucker more?

DiMarzio made the Bluesbucker to sound like a P-90, but it's still humbucking. It's got only one active coil, the other coil just keeps it humbucking. Supposedly, if you turn it around in the neck position (where the adjustable poles would face the bridge) you'll get a tele-like sound from it, too. A lot of players have said that it'll never get muddy.

Here's a sample of it clean:

Here are a few more. These are in a hollowbody First clip is in the neck position, second is in the bridge:

Here's the Bluesbucker in the neck position being used in a solo. It's a really bright pickup, and if you don't listen closely, you might mistake it for a bridge pup.

Actually, they're pretty much even in output.

According to DMZs website, the Evolution neck's output is 294 mV, and the Fred's is 305.
