Re: Cool Pickup Fact Sheet from Seymour:

Hmmm....that didn't print very well. Let's try it this way:

Re: Cool Pickup Fact Sheet from Seymour:

the resistance is less than I would have thought for the early ones, but I wonder what those early coils look like

Bulging in the middle. Hand wound. The pickups from my '54 Tele and '63 Strat do not look like fishing line or thread neatly wound around a spool. Lew

Re: Cool Pickup Fact Sheet from Seymour:

that is probably more than i need to know but still useful. thanks for posting this lew

I'm a '53 model. I'm bulging in the middle too. :laugh2:

Thanks for the info Lew. ;)

yes, I thought the coils were pretty fat, and we know that everything affects the tone in some way

Re: Cool Pickup Fact Sheet from Seymour:

GREAT info Lew! So now we just need to find out which configurations he based which pups off of. An example being the SSL1 is tonally closest to a 55 or the APS coil winding is most similiar to a 60. That would be oh so cool!
Of course it might be that each pup is a compromise of the best characteristics of a particular SET of years.

If Jimi Hendrix was playing '67 Strats he was using some pretty weak pickups!

This also might explain why Eric Johnson changed the pickups in his '54 and why I was always a little disappointed in the output and tone of my '54 Strat and liked my '57 Strat alot more but the one I've kept all these years is my '63!

Also, SRV's Strat was a '63 and '63 seems to have the best chance of having fairly strong but vintage style pickups with Formvar coating.

To me this list verifies what some of us heard all along: 50's Strats have weaker pickups than early 60's Strats and Fender/CBS Strats from '65 on have weaker pickups than those from '64 or before.

Re: Cool Pickup Fact Sheet from Seymour:

But waitaminnit... Aren't these just ONE example from each year? How can you extrapolate that YOUR '54 is the same as the one SD tested? After all, there WERE hand wound!

Re: Cool Pickup Fact Sheet from Seymour:

Lew, really cool information. I'm not all that much of a classic Fender guy, but it was an interesting read anyway. :)

The other attachment you attached still wasn't lined up correctly, so I did that.
