Cool Rails bridge (SCR-1b) in the NECK position?

Hi everyone!

I wanted to put Cool Rails neck pickup (SCR-1n) in the neck position of my HSS superstrat (Ash/Maple/Rosewood), but many ppl complained that the sound they get is too muffled (and easily lost in the mix)... Since I'm after Andy Timmons' tone, and Hot Rails would be too hot for this application, have anyone of you guys tried placing the bridge version of Cool Rails in the neck position, and what were the results? Since the bridge version of the CR is EQ'd more like Cruisers that Timmons use and since it's only a bit hotter than the regular CR, would it make a noticable difference VS the SCR-1n?

Thanks!

Yes, that would be my reasoning. That the bridge version seems to be voiced differently while not much hotter than the neck. I haven't tried it tho.

The Cool Rails is voiced like a humbucker and won't give you what your looking for. Andy Timmons uses two Cruiser Bridge models so I would just get those. If you prefer Duncan's then try two Vintage Rails bridge models.

if the neck version is muffled (it isnt to my ears) then the bridge will be worse since its voiced a bit darker and thicker. who says its muffled? the interwebz or it sounds that way to you? are you using 250k pots or 500k? whats the tone control setup?

I would probably go with the Cuisers, but my guitar is routed for "oval" shaped single coils (Such as Duncan-made)... "Triangular" shaped Dimarzios couldn't fit in, so I'm considering Duncan alternatives.

I was thinking the same way, but I was curious since the neck version has pronounced mids, while the bridge version has treble and bass a bit higher than mids, and the PU is a bit hotter, so I thought - maybe it'll compensate the lack of the "grit" in SCR-1n.

Tbh, I haven't tried CR in my guitar... I've been reading reviews and listening to Youtube/Soundcloud samples of SCR-1n so my opinion on that PU is totally based on web sources...

I'm using 500K pots, one of them push-pull for coil splitting (and I would use the pickup in both scenarios) and a 5-way switch. I was considering putting Dimarzio AT-1 in the bridge, Vintage Rails (maybe) in the middle, but the neck PU is the toughest choice (based on the information I have).

I believe you can order the oval routed ones from Dimarzio. Why don’t you give them a call?

PS I also like Andy Timmons. I have a satch track neck and a ft-1 middle. If I combine the 2 with no split (just neck and middle, no coil split) and roll the volume down to 6 I get a sound very similar to his neck tone. That said, the cruisers would be even closer.

Haven't thought about that yet... Thanks for the suggestion, man!
However, I did just that yesterday, and I got a very prompt reply from them:

"All of our Strat-size pickups are available with a no-flange option for pickup cavities like those in your guitar. There is a $20 US list price upcharge for this option.
DiMarzio Inc."

Thanks everyone, rock on ppl! \m/
