Cool Rails Direct Mount Question

It there any easy way to pop out the brass threads on these so they can be direct-mounted. Usually, I can direct mounting these fine without doing anything, but for some reason, the builders of the particular guitar I want to put this in used the same screws that you would normally use in a pickguard for direct mounting. So I either need to drill this out, which seems like it might not be too good for my drill bit (this is alot thicker than the thin metal on a humbucker mounting leg) or somehow get those inserts out. Any suggestions that don't involve (unhelpfully) advising me to use a smaller screw? :D

Re: Cool Rails Direct Mount Question

I am in the process of acquiring small enough screws so that I can direct mount pickups without having to go through that question.

Given the hardness of the wood it should be no problem. Just had Real World stuff get in the way.

Re: Cool Rails Direct Mount Question

The brass inserts won't hurt your drill bit, brass is a lot softer than the steel bit. But if you want to take them out, you can probably just heat them with a soldering iron until the plastic gets soft and pull them out.

I would plug the holes in the body of the guitar, then use smaller screws to mount the PU. That way if you don't like the PU, it is undamaged, and would be easier to sell.
That is how I mounted the 1/4# neck in the last guitar I built (in sig), and it worked out great.

About 10 sec of pressure with the drill and they popped right out! Don't even know if the threads were stripped. And the guitar in question has threaded inserts so no plugging of holes monkey business will ever be happening on this guitar.

Oh cool. I didn't realize they came out that easy. I learned something today.
