COOL RAILS neck and bridge review

So my father in-law brought home a black Squier Affinity about a week ago. It did not work due to the electronics being bad. Long story short I removed all the electronics and pickups, ordered a new pickguard from warmoth and new pots and an LP style pickup selector. I found a set of Cool Rails, neck and bridge, on craigslist for $70.

After installing the pickups I had difficulty getting everything to fit into the narrow cavity area where the pickup wires run. This is mainly Squier's fault for a cutting a narrow route. After install and a couple hours setting the guitar up and a new nut it sounded great. My main complaint is that the neck pickup was difficult to balance with the bridge pickup. I kept the bridge pickup at 6/64 and balanced the neck to the bridge. I had to drop the neck pickup pretty low. It's probably about 11/64. I think most people use a Hot Rails in the bridge so there wouldn't be as much of a balance issue.

The bridge pickup sounds hotter than a standard single coil but still has a great clean sparkle. The neck pickup is thicker of course in comparison to the bridge and a standard sc but still has great definition and some top end grind. With both pickups engaged in clean mode it sounds amazing. One of my favorite clean sounds. Much like a Jazzmaster with both pickups engaged. This is my second strat with two pickup configuration. I prefer the simplicity and the tone of neck and bridge combined vs neck and middle or bridge and middle.

Cool Rails is one of my favorite Duncan pups. Looks sweet.

Pretty sure I sold those to you! Dumb question, are you sure you got the pickups in the proper positions (neck & bridge)? I only ask because other than one letter on the label they're both identical in appearance (but not in output). Hope you enjoy them!

I think you did sell them to me. I triple checked that they were installed in the right positions and have a pic of the inside for wiring reference. I recently disconnected the tone pot. The pickup height is actually more like 6/64 bridge and 9/64 neck. So not huge difference. Maybe it's just the guitar. It still sounds great. I read someone else's review who had more of a difference in pickup height with these than I did and they swear they had them in the right positions. Maybe it's because the DC resistance of the neck is 9.4 k and the bridge is 10.3.

Re: COOL RAILS neck and bridge review

the height difference should be expected, there is waaay more string movement in the neck than the bridge and the cool rails bridge isnt terribly overwound compared to the neck

I did not have good results with Cool Rails in the bridge on my strat.... I have a American pro ii which BTW already had great sound! I installed a Cool Rail in the bridge and i.m finding it is extremely filled with HI Mid, nothing else. Very hard to tame! I found it not very flexible at all when in the second position, The Strat Quack is completely gone there. I tried raising , lowering the pup, .....rolling of mid on my amp to almost 0. I purchased it for a little beef in the bridge. It does not have the tone i was looking for,. Missing all the sonic clarities. I will be taking it out and putting the original back in at the cost of the Cool Rail itself.. I will continue to drive my HRD with pedals to get the juice i.m looking for. I did love the fact it was quiet!!!! I may consider another alternative, if anyone has suggestions, but it wont be without a ton more research!

what were you replacing and what did you expect to get from the swap?

Was hoping the cool rail would sound like a tapped humbucker at least, like my Charvel.. which has Duncans The original Fender pup will be going back in this weekend..

i really like the cool rails, but it sounds similar to a sh2 humbucker more than anything else.

not sure what a "tapped humbucker" sounds like? did you wire it for auto split in the notch position?

and also, this thread is almost ten years old. it would be better to start your own if you want to dig into things
