hey guys, to get as close to slash on strat in the neck position. some ppl say cool rails, and others say Alnico II pros if ur willing to bore out. What do u guys think is better.

Never tried anything like what your suggesting but I don't know if alder or ash will sound the same as a Slash with a AII Pro. I think you'd be better off with the CR, afterall you wouldn't need to rout anything and it is designed to sound like a normal bucker. Just my 2 cts. I'd wait for someone a bit more experienced.

I'd go for the Cool Rails. This pickup packs an awful lot of punch, and can handle clean as well as it can handle distortion. As LSP said, it probably wouldn't be worth the extra effort of putting a humbucker in there. The Cool Rails are an awesome pickup, and I'd imagine they can get the Slash tone with the right rig.

Thanks guys. Just wondering, if i put cool rails in the neck, do they make hot rails i could throw in the bridge for when i want to go more metal sounding. Or do theyjust make hot rails for neck and middle. THANKS but it seems the ppl posting r going against the ppl in the poll lol

I've heard too many cover bands try the Slash sound thing. Just go from neck pickup with tone rolled down to taste, using amp distortion. That's what I'd recommend. If you truly want to sound like Slash, you'd buy a Slash signature guitar anyways. I say just play what you want on what you want. Sound like YOU want to, and play one of their songs if you like. I have more respect for people who sound like themselves rather than someone else anyways. Oh well, I think I'm rambling on, but that's my opinion.

ya i am trying to go for my own tone... thats y i asked about the hot rails. i was thinking if i combined those with, as close as i could get to slash sound. it would be like a metal version of him. when i used bolth those pickups at the smae time. or i could just play like him if i wanted to or swicth to like a miden sound.

I use ALNICO 2 Pros in a LP and it sounds like SLASH. The A2PRO does not necessarily have the same tone in other guitars, so don't be so quick to think it will give you slash in a strat. BTW don't forget to use a Marshall, it's a BIG part of the tone as well. So I voted COOL RAIL just for convenience. I think the COOL RAIL or LIL 59 would give you a good tone esp with 250k caps and rolling some tone off.

Caps regulate electrical flow thru a circuit, so when you put one on your volume or tone pot and turn the knob you are sending power thru them. What does this mean to your ear? Certain values make your pickups sound creamier and other values will make your pickups sound brighter, so to speak. How was that for the 101 version

Most caps look like small chicklets with a stiff wire coming out of each end. When soldered to a pot that pot becomes a tone pot. The tone pot removes highend as it is turned from 10 to 1.
They come in a bunch of different values. The higher the value, the more highs will get rolled off as you approach zero. Strat usually use .022 and pauls .047

Yes. Hot Rails are available in both neck/middle and bridge models. All the single-sized humbuckers are. As someone else has said, the Lil '59 is always a good pickup, as the Hot Rails tend to get a bit muddy, and cannot play cleans so well.
