Cool Rails plus Lil 59er wiring

I have cool rails neck and middle on my strat. Getting a little 59er for bridge today. I want all the pickups in phase with each other if possible. (no splitting) Should I just put the green/plain to ground and black to hot on all three? Or does middle need to be different? Thanks. With Duncan my guitar has never been so happy!

Welcome to the forum!

Yes, wire them all the same. Green and bare to ground, red and white soldered together and taped off, black to hot.

Come back and let us know how this project turns out- with pics!

Re: Cool Rails plus Lil 59er wiring

got it in still got bit of a ground buzz, when i had a hot rails in bridge before it was pretty much noise free. Ground wire is from volume pot casing to tremelo claw and of course shield on output jack... . tried grounding additionally to other spots .... less noise when my fingers touch strings or ground points

Re: Cool Rails plus Lil 59er wiring

discovered a stray ground wire from past (???) that had been under the bridge but come loose, corrected all that, grounded now to both claw and bridgeblock, still a little hum, reduces when i touch strings. should it only be grounded to claw or bridge but not both? do differentials in ground or double grounding cause loops in instrument level audio?

Re: Cool Rails plus Lil 59er wiring

There's only 1 ground - out the jack - so there can't be ground loops in a guitar. You just wanna make sure that there are ground wires soldered to all your components, including switches, that run somehow to the main ground and a ground wire soldered to the bridge.

Re: Cool Rails plus Lil 59er wiring

ok thanks i will double check on that later on. as far as i could tell all components had a ground that went to the solder "blob" on back sheild of the volume pot. there may be one that goes to the tone pot for neck pu, but that is joined to volume pot anyway. maybe one of my ground wires has a fault. thanks for your time

Re: Cool Rails plus Lil 59er wiring

does SD sell a lil 59 that is wound in same direction as a cool rails middle. i would like to have option for bridge and middle together in "non-quack" in phase etc for times when I want a bridge sound but thicker. i thought the 59er would sound thicker than it does. when i had hot rails in bridge i reversed phase then the bridge/middle combo was the super thin low volume sound.

Re: Cool Rails plus Lil 59er wiring

Both the Cool Rails and Little 59 are in phase with each other. Are you hearing something different when they are used together? You could always wire them in series.

Re: Cool Rails plus Lil 59er wiring

I have 3 cool rails in a Strat. Bridge/Middle still has some audible quack so what you are experiencing is normal. You can try putting them in series but I personally think it would be a big pile of mud.

Re: Cool Rails plus Lil 59er wiring

what i think i am hearing is the same tone i used to get when i had stock squire SC in middle and bridge,(which i guess were out of phase because the two together would cancel hum) characterizised by a drop in hi-mid(2.5k-4k), a slight rise in lower mids (450-800hz) and a bit of high end sparkle. When my current cool rails middle and 59er bridge are together it is that sound. i just wonder if all this time there has maybe been some oddball wiring on my switch, like the jumper wires in a weird place or something? Anyway thanks for your thoughts on it everyone, i guess i need to study some wiring diagrams and check whats in my guitar against those.

With the pickups so close together you get something of an out of phase sound even with humbuckers. You're wiring is fine. It's just the nature of a Strat.

Re: Cool Rails plus Lil 59er wiring

Thanks! Im still chasing down this frustrating grounding problem. I even wired only the 59er straight to output jack, and of course grounded to claw and bridge, bypassing pots and switch, still got hum. Never have run into this before... I guess something is wrong with my guitar
