Cool Randall MTS soundclips! Hear 6L6 compared to EL-34.

Gear Ho
I was just listening to the Randall MTS modular amps on the Randall site.
I like how they organized their clips, so I can hear every preamp with both 6L6's and EL-34's, not to mention strats, LP's, tele, and Jr.
This is a great way to listen to the differences between preamp styles, output sections, and guitars, and then cross referencing them to hear the subtle nuances of the tone. Check it out.

I've bought and sold a lot of amps....around 90, and years ago had the rackmounted 120W tube head, which may have been the best Randall Dime ever used, and also had one of those stale sounding SS heads from the 80's.
I'll admit, there's almost no Randall amp I think is good....up until now with these modular amps. These are probably the best things Randall has ever made. Still, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, because Bruce Egnater basically sold Randall this design.

A couple weeks ago, I checked out the dual module 1-12 combo, and was pleasantly surprised that I liked it. I think these amps are a good deal for someone wanting a versatile rig, especially since you can always buy more modules for $200-$250.

That MTS things has been up for a while now..prolly a year. It's def a cool sales tool. Match the pre to the power amp tubes you like.

I like those old RG SS heads from the 80s...they got some great 2203 type crunch. Trick was not overdoing the gain..they had a sweet spot, and you were always better served dialing ina bit less gain than might sound optimal to your ear playing without your band. If you dialed in a little too much...the SS buzz just came outta nowhere and the sound got horrid.

I guess you are talking about the 50 watt combo... the modules add alot to the features of the amp for sure!

Those modules sound pretty close to the real thing! Still give this the edge over the Line 6 stuff which is getting better and better too.

Love the little 15Watt single channel head on the site!!! Perfect practise amp?

There's used to be a forum member, Hawkman, who used the Egnater version of the RM4 preamp, along with a VHT power amp and 2 Bogner 2-12's. I remember that he loved that rig. I'd be inclined to go the same route, if I were considering buying a Randall.....buy the RM4 preamp, then use something like VHT, Marshall, or Mesa for power and speakers.

I couldnt hear alot of difference.. they all had similar sounds wether it was high or low gain. Garbage if you ask me, haha.

Overall I like the idea of modular preamps and power amps. But the one thing I though about listening to them was that in many cases I thought that the modules all shared the same eq and they just varied the amount of gain. I also think they use the same 12zx7's for every module and you might be able to tweak the sound of each module with 12ay, 12au, etc.
