Cooler tapped, 59N or JazzN?

Trying to decide on which to match up with a JB & SSL-1 in my superstrat. I'd like to achieve a decent mock Strat 4th-pos tone, as well as a fat & smooth full HB neck tone. It'll also be tapped with the JB bridge tap for a middle position combination. Thoughts?

have tried them both. depends on what your idea of "cool" and "fat & smooth" is. they are both very similar where the Jazz is a little cleaner and the '59 is a little hotter. on paper they look very very similar.

I like the '59n more than the Jn. better yet, I like them both with a polished A4 mag...but still like the '59n more. a cool alternative is a J/59n hybrid... even cooler is that hybrid with an A4.

but, if it came down to picking a single humbucker.... I do think the Jazz would be more in line with what you want.

jazz matches up really well with the jb. From experience, I understand why that is seymour's favorite combo. Middle position will give you incredible tone. Jazz also matches up nicely with custom in middle position. I like 59 better for coil tap. But that's just an opinion

if your looking for a fat, smooth and full neck tone, then go with the 59n

if your looking for a smooth articulate and glassy tone, then go with the jazz

jazz is a little less output than the 59n

both are good. I like the jazz better with distortion and it pairs up better with most bridge pups in the middle position.

I do like the 59n with A4 mag and custom with A8 mag. Use that combo in middle position with distortion and it is a thing of beauty.. But so is the jazzn/custom bridge in same setup.

hope this helps

Thanks for all the great opinions guys. I think i'm leaning towards the Jazz, haven't had one in a guitar yet so i'll give it a go. Based on experiences with my Gibsons, the 59N is like a less-gnarly version of the PGN, and it seems like the Jazz is even cleaner, which might be a nice fit in an alder/maple superstrat and round out the arsenal. I forgot to mention the wood in my initial post, its an alder body, maple neck & fingerboard.

I can understand that... to clarify, i'm not looking to split it by itself, just for combining with SSL-1 for 4th pos. tones and JB split for middle pos.

I think the 59n then. It has more bass and a slightly fuller sound split than the Jazz N.

Maybe go with a 59b as a neck pickup. Vintage Gibsons from the 50's used the same 8.2K humbucker in both the neck and bridge locations. You could get a stronger tone from splitting a bridge model 59b pickup put in the neck position and still be within vintage specs for a neck pickup. But I wouldn't go hotter than that for a neck humbucker.

Hmm, interesting... I was leaning towards the lower output range for this one originally. In my Gibsons, the 59N is like a less-gnarly PGN... but still with that classic vibe. Thought the Jazz might round out the arsenal nicely, but if ya'll think the 59N is better for the tapped stuff, that could be a game-changer.
