Could Someone Walk Me Thru A Magnet Swap?

My Guitar Weeps

New member
I've searched the forums and couldn't come up with anything & the only thing I've done is remove covers and install pickups. What I did find in the search was that apparently its pretty easy. The pu is a braided conductor nickel covered (all from the factory) CC. I read one of Jeremy's posts that says a ceramic will make it a sh5 custom & A5=sh14 C5. The bass is too squishy for me but I'm not ready to give up on it. Right now I have it paired w/ a BBPro in a Vintage Mahogany Gibby Lester.

So anyway, can someone hook me up?

Thanks

Re: Could Someone Walk Me Thru A Magnet Swap?

I have a set of hb's I pulled from a Epi LP standard. Should there be a problem with me pulling the magnet out of the bridge pu and putting it in the CC (once I know how)? I'm still researching what kind of magnets are in the Epi pu's. It's an 04 and so far the best guess is A5.

Its pretty easy.

Remove the pickup from the guitar and remove any mounting rings.

Remove and save the cloth tape around the bobbins.

Loosen but do not remove the 4 screws that attach the bobbins to the baseplate and wiggle the bobbins away from the baseplate. If you look at either end of the pickup you will see the end of a metal rectangular bar. That is the magnet.

Get a pair of tweezers or needle nose pliers and grasp the end of the magnet and slide it out. The wax may be holding it in place but it will come free if you shift it a little. You wont break the pickup easily so don't be too timid with it.

PAY ATTENTION!!!

The edge of the bar magnet that is touching the stud bobbin must touch the stud bobbin of the other pickup and visa versa in order to have the correct polarities on the bobbins. If you mess it up you'll have to do this all over to correct the problem.

Press the bobbins back down to the base plate, tighten the screws and re-install the tape.

The first time is the hardest, after that its easy.

Re: Could Someone Walk Me Thru A Magnet Swap?

Both pickups are covered and potted, and I plan on re-covering them and re-potting them. That's what I was really curious about, was if I'd have to remove the cover. It sounds like the A5 is exactly what I need to put in the CC. From the tone comparison chart with the A5 (SH-14), it will get me very close to a SETH with the exception of the DCR. The resonant peak is within 0.5 KHz and the EQ is almost dead on. I'm just wondering if I should buy a new A5 bar or robb one from the EPI HB I'm never gonna use again. What do you think? Thanks for the info also

Cool link! Hey I Know the guy that posted this cool link pretty well...:nana:

That guy is ok. He used to do a lot of good posts but now he's always off on his motorcylce. LOL!

Your PG tutorial gets so many referrals from this forum. You should redo it here so they can put it in the SD archive.
