Cover of "So What"

Re: Cover of "So What"

hahaha....sorry. i'm a fan of Miles Davis and I saw this in my real book....i couldnt resist

Re: Cover of "So What"

thanks for sharing it

nice clean tone - good warmth and roundness, even on the high notes

i could not shake the feeling of the 'push/pull' that came from the uneven rhythm during the head ... and i guess i was kinda waiting for it to swing solidly ... the comping straight eights during the solo seemed a bit off in both meter and feel too ... and i think i counted the change as being not quite as per the chart too ...

i like the way you left space in your solo ... you went for a different mode feel which was kinda interesting ... seemed like the change took you buy surprise as your line didnt go across the bar there

do you have a drum machine program or a metronome that clicks with swung eighths? .. see if you can work a steadier rhythm behind your comping to get into the feel a bit more

nice work

Re: Cover of "So What"

thanks for the advice T4D...i might have a metronome that does that. let me look around here

Re: Cover of "So What"

What did you use to play with? It wounds really good.

Re: Cover of "So What"

It is a cool tune...I like it!
And it brings back memories...my mate and me used to jam over that thing, one would play the maintheme...and the other would noodle away, and then trade...
More of that stuff!!

Re: Cover of "So What"

thanks rid!!!

it's a really easy to improv over. it's helped me improve my sense of modes

Re: Cover of "So What"

thanks jumpmarine. this is the first real clip I've recorded in a long time.

Re: Cover of "So What"

Nice, man! I dig it. Check out this book by Jamey Aebersold. It's got a play-along backing track for a number of Miles Davis tunes, including "So What." The backing track is played by an actual jazz trio, not MIDI or anything like that.

Aebersold's book series is awesome, and I think you'd really dig playing along with these tracks a lot more than playing along with a metronome. The books are pretty inexpensive, too.

Re: Cover of "So What"

Sounded pretty good, though the biggest issue I noticed was timing. It sounds like you're not playing all eighth notes in the head, that you're leaving space that shouldn't be there before you play the last note. Like someone else suggested you should play along with a drum track or a metronome. You want to be able to tap your foot in a steady rhythm with the song and I wasn't able to do that. Overall though it was pretty good - the improv was pretty good and I liked your tone.
