Cover question...

ok.. pickup covers alter the sound of the pickup right? or am i wrong? say i got a pickup with a cover and i remove the cover will it sound just like if i wouldve bought it without the cover? how exactly does the cover alter the pickups sound? i somehow associate pickup covers to slightly less "agressive" sounding pickups.. tho i never realy could test this theory of mine exept for once i tried a Custom uncovered and a Distortion covered and i stayed with the Custom cuz to me it sounded more "agressive" somehow.. tho i might have been just the guitar, the amp, the fx and setup or how i wired it or something.. it was for a friend who had this realy shrill and ear pearcing sounding bridge pickup and i had to find him something in like 30 min before he had to go play.. so i couldnt realy test further and they're two diferent sounding pickups anyways..

it was supose to be only a "test" to see if a pup change would save his guitar and he loved it so much he stayed with MY pickup! ...and i got stuck with the crap one (that bastard lol)

The covers take some trebles away. Something like leaving your tone knob on 7.5. his occurs because of capacitance. I'm sure someone wil pop by with more info. Meantime, trust your ears.

Plastic PUP covers should not change the sound BUT the real question is what are the colours in the covers made up of?

If they are black then it's got to be carbon, can suck out some highs due to a capactive effect, gives a mid range boost.

For the white's the problem is it titanium dioxide or magnesium carbonate or mica? Yes you have entered Nerd World, you will never wonder about how some get so passionate about string gauge/ brand again.

TiDioxide is really bright white and has a sting, Magnesium Carbonate is softer/ mellow and Mica is a bit reverbby/ metal clang. I really should get out more!

As I am card carrying member of "single coils rule" I shouldn't comment on humbucker's but what the hey!

The density of the cover has a lot to do with the "warmth", it is not how thick it is made what it is made of. Chromed brass does have a deeper tone than Nickel steel just due to the fact to the 'mu' effect that the Cr Brass has, the magnets are damped to a degree because brass is not a great magnetic conducter. Chrome is.

Nickel is part of the magnet family, AlNiCo V ring any bells? Steel of course 'sucks'.
