Covered humbucker pot value

Does using 500k volume pot (vs.250k) equivalent to difference between covered & uncovered humbucker?
I like my JB with 250k but I’m going to put a cover on it. Do you think I should use 500k to compensate?

Re: Covered humbucker pot value

Its not really the same. Maybe going for a 500k vs 250k tone pot is more equivalent.....as the cover is likely to kill generally top end only - the tone pot value will change only highs. A vol pot change changes practically the whole pickup resonant frequency......except the bass - as this place has cause to know, the bass stays unchanged with a vol pot value change.

Re: Covered humbucker pot value

You could use a no load tone pot if you want the option for more highs.

I don't think it is the same, either. If you like 250k with your JB, I'd use that, cover or not.

Re: Covered humbucker pot value

No, I would say that the two are not comparable.

The difference with a good quality (e.g. Seymour Duncan) humbucker cover vs. open coils is barely audible IME, if at all. OTOH, the difference between pot values can be very noticeable IME.

I loves me my treble (can always be reduced later, but can't easily be added later), but I have zero worries about covering a humbucker. If that's the look I want, then I put covers on, without thinking twice about what it will do to my tone.

All that being said, I would be using at least a 500K pot with a JB, and I actually find 1M better, myself. Those pickups really smear over and obscure the high end, inherently.
