i've already decided i like the sound of covered humbuckers over uncovered. can any of you scientists tell me what is the real sonic difference betwixt the two?

Howdy,

Most of my experience is with single-coils P/Us. The '59s in my old ES-335 are uncovered, but only because I inadvertently ordered them that way!
I vaguely recall a comment from Eric Clapton preferring the tone of "nekkid" 'buckers; some claim they'll have a bit more presence and sensitivity as well. You be the judge.
My 335 looks just plain strange without the Nickel covers.

Covers will suck away a bit of presence/sizzle to varying degrees, depending on the metallic composition of the cover. Nickel silver is pretty transparent. Solid brass covers are kinda bad.

Also, in my experience, gold covers tend to suck away more treble than nickel or chrome. I'm guessing because they have to coat it with copper or brass in order to get the gold plating to stick.
