Covers for Pearly Gates?

Has anybody put nickel or gold covers on Pearlys and noticed a difference in tone? Do you know which covers fit from the two sizes SD sells? Do they have to be SD covers?I'm replacing my Gibson 57 Classics cuz they're just too dark. Want to brighten things up a bit with a little more bite but not too much. Going on a LP Custom. I had some Seth Lovers in but they didn't seem too much different and are microphonic not being potted....

Thanks for the add by the way

Re: Covers for Pearly Gates?

With nickel covers you hardly hear a difference, but gold covers are known for killing some highs. I checked that some years ago with a Seth Lover Set.
Covers come in different string spaces: 49 mm is the vintage spacing for Duncans, trembuckers have a special spacing.

That’s totally interesting because I recently had the opposite effect where I have a gold covered Seth neck and gold covered 59 neck and they are noticeably brighter than my nickel/chrome covered Seth neck and my no-cover 59 neck. The two Seth’s and the two 59s resistance measure within .2k of each other, which is nearly identical, same number of turns and nearly same amount of wire for each type. I wonder what else could make the difference in the same guitar same setup?

Is this a purely looks thing? Or are you wanting to get a different sound out of a set of Pearly Gates set?

I’ve had a set of Custom Shop Pearlies covered and uncovered. I didn’t notice any appreciable difference.

Looks only....I have a LP Custom with all gold hardware and I'm trying to keep the look....

Could it have been a slight height variation? Sometimes a surprisingly tiny difference can affect the sound.

If not, maybe it's just that the gold ones had...

wait for it...

more sparkle!

Re: Covers for Pearly Gates?

Also, I think Pearlies are available with gold covers.
