Cracked Bobbin... How Big A Deal?

I sent my Custom Custom to Duncan for a mag swap, MJ called me today, and being I was at work I couldn't really talk, but she said there was a crack in a bobbin, significant one, and she wasn't sure I sent it in for a mag swap and rewind. I told her just the swap, and she said she was gonna replace the bobbin as well.

How big a deal is a cracked bobbin to the sound of the pickup?

Not to sound.... To the actual windings... I got an old PG+ with a piece of the bobbin cracked off and the windings were exposed at that point and broke there. A crack may snag a winding and break it internally and stop that coil from working. The way it could affect sound is by causing a forced coil split :P

Cracked Bobbin!! OH MY!! must send that pickup to the bloodrose pickup disposal address at once!!! LOL J/k!!! as long as the coils arent damaged or affected, it is a non issue other than visual. I was doing a mag swap and was trying to pull the bobbins lose from the base and cracked a bobbin. works just fine and luckily its barely noticable. Otherwise Id be crushed. Im very picky and also this happened on a guitar with red pups, so not run of the mill.. Very cool of MJ to be proactive.

I most curious as to how it cracked... The pickup was from my GMW build, I never noticed a crack, but it's been out of that guitar for quite some time though, replaced with an Alternative 8, using it in a Frankie inspired build.

Re: Cracked Bobbin... How Big A Deal?

I believe there's something about Duncan's non-Leesona machines that makes the bobbins crack. I don't remember ever having a SD PAF or CS bucker that had bobbin cracks, not to say they don't, but I believe there are less incidents with Leesona wound pups.

They're most likely not cracks. They're gas lines from the injection molding process and they typically emanate outwards from the pole pieces. We call them "spider legs." They're not structural and they don't affect the performance or longevity of the pickup.

would that be what I see more commonly on the slug bobbin, going from slug to slug? little hairline cracks that aren't really seen unless you're right up on the pickup?

a-ha! good info there.

while strictly cosmetic, do you guys get much feedback from people that find them? is it just a part of the process, or are there alternatives to reduce or eliminate them? are they more common on certain bobbin material or can it happen on any pickup?
