Cracked Epi Les Paul Headstock

My guitar suffered a nasty fall and the headstock cracked but is still intact. Any tips on how to fix it would be greatly appreciated, would like to try it myself first. Below are pictures.

Re: Cracked Epi Les Paul Headstock

If you aren't experienced at least a little with woodworking, take it to someone who is. Good Titebond glue and good clamping will generally do the trick.

Re: Cracked Epi Les Paul Headstock

Do you have a pic of the neck and break from further away, please? It would help to know where the break is relative to the headstock-to-neck scarf joint.

Re: Cracked Epi Les Paul Headstock

I used to buy a lot of broken headstock guitars cheap to practice on (have done over 100). My method is probably different than most (not always better). I spread the crack as far as I feel comfortable with out breaking it off, clean out loose wood, then put in a decent amout of Titebond. Clamp tightly for 24 hours. Then I remove the tuners and using a 1/4" drill bit approx 12"-14" long. I carefully drill from the top of the headstock 2 holes. close to tuners on both sides and end up behind the fretboard on either side of the truss rod. I then put Titebond into the hole and on a grade 8 steel rod (1/4"). I insert a rod into each hole and carefully tap it all the way home. I have premeasured and cut off the steel rod to where it sits approx 1/8" to 1/4" below end of headstock. Letting this set up for 24 hours, I then fill the holes with putty, refinish as required and string it up and play! Works for me, my favorite guitar is a Gibby LP Studio I bought from Treverous and repaired just this way. He had pics on here of it some time back.

Re: Cracked Epi Les Paul Headstock

Titebond is good stuff. Steel rods are def a sure way to make the repair bullet-proof, but Titebond will hold the break together by itself. If you glue 2 boards together with TB, once it's set, you can't pry it apart, if you take a hammer and chisel, it will not separate at the glue line. I'd go to the drugstore or some hobby shop and buy a disposable syringe...get a decent sized needle if it's the druggie type or the hobby shops have a plastic needle. Shove that tip in as far as it will go, and squeeze all the glue in, it needs to overflow. Any glue mess wipes off clean with a damp rag. Once you have flooded the break, clamp that down. Use scrap thin pieces of wood so the clamp won't mash yer headstock...unless ya use the plastic 'trigger' clamps. Before you start, remove stings, tuners if they will be in the way of clamping. Let it cure a few days. If ya know any woodworkers, they could help and prolly have some good clamps. It's a clean break and def fixable.

I've been told that there is a guy in town that will do a good job for $100. Is that reasonable?

additional pics that were requested. Sorry they're kinda blurry.

Re: Cracked Epi Les Paul Headstock

My Epi Les Paul suffered the same fate but worse... mine was so bad the truss rod was sticking out the back... saddly someone that didn't know what they were doing glued it back together before i could and made a massive mistake clamping it without supporting the neck.... left a hump in my fingerboard... i have another Epi, an Explorer that i glued back together that was really destroyed bad!!!! and it worked perfectly after the glue set...

but yours looks to be an easier fix then the 2 i have... getting glue in there can be slightly tricky but not imposible... i sometimes use business cards to try and scoop glue down inside the cracks and splits...

clamp it well... leave clamped over night at least... i like to wait a few days before the strings go back on...

Re: Cracked Epi Les Paul Headstock

I wouldn't pay $100 to fix an Epi LP. I think the metal rods are probably overkill, but if you want to be extra safe I'm sure it would work. I think filling joint with Titebond and clamping should hold just fine. You have a clean break with plenty of surface area for the glue to grab onto.

ya.. a glue joint is said to be stronger then the wood itself, so if it's clamped right it should be stronger then before the break in that spot...

Re: Cracked Epi Les Paul Headstock

How'd you drop it?

I was upset after we played. I'm not sure if it happened from the dropping or from ripping the strings off with my hand. Or both.

So then it's a good thing it broke, right? =)

Re: Cracked Epi Les Paul Headstock

Injection might work to fix it but because of the angle you will probably end up with Staples. Not as bad as you might think, the legendary Peter Green/Gary Moore Les Paul has had staples for about thirty years.

You're lucky you didn't rip your hand open.

Were you upset at the guitar for not playing well?

I could never treat any les paul of any kind like that man. You got to love your instruments for them to love you back. Good luck and take it to a TECH!

Re: Cracked Epi Les Paul Headstock

I wouldn't spend $100 on an Epiphone myself - I would try and repair it on my own first. As others have said, get some glue in there, clamp it for a couple of days and see how it goes.

Re: Cracked Epi Les Paul Headstock

How would I get the glue into those cracks without busting it off completely?

If your asking these kind of questions you have no business doing this repair. take it to a Luthier and make sure he is qualified! IF you have learned anything from this; store your guitar in its case not on a stand!!

or the other option is:
