crackling..

my Peavey Ultra plus is making a crackling sound.. Its a few years old, hasnt been played a tremendous amount but has been sitting awhile.. and was covered very well, so very clean inside.
Tubes are original sovteks but not alot of time on em.. Im gonna get a can of air and hit all the jacks and tube sockets. Any other guesses what it might be??

Re: crackling..

remove and reinsert each of the tubes several times. Helps remove any oxidation from pins and socket contacts. worth trying.

Re: crackling..

How about a little electronics cleaner in the pots? Those can get dust in 'em and cause a crackling sound. I have a bass that has a recurring dust problem in a stacked pot that needs to be "dosed" from time to time.

Re: crackling..

thanks guys! Ill try these in a day or so. Im thinking it may be tube sockets as opposed to pots as it isnt crackling when I turn knobs, just when I play

Re: crackling..

For cleaning tube sockets, you'll want a contact cleaner that does not leave a residue. Spray some on the pins of a tube before working it in and out of the socket a few times.

That's what I suggest too. Since it's not crackling when you turn the pots the problem probably lies elsewhere, but I would use some spray on the pots and the input jack too while you are at it, that never hurts. But the tube sockets are your first concern and doing what Little Pigbacon suggested above will likely fix the problem if your tubes are still good. Hope you'll be playing crackless soon bro! :D Keep us posted if the problem is solved or not after you went at it with contact spray will you?

Re: crackling..

Might be bad filter capacitors too. Especially if they're 15-20 years old and the amp has been sitting for a long time.

Re: crackling..

I dusted out the chassis (tho it was remarkably clean), pulled all the tubes and sprayed electronics cleaner on the pins and worked them in and out a few times. Will try it tomorrow hopefully. It could possibly caps, but the amp doesnt have much use and isnt terribly old.
last year they were made. possibly 2008? Trying to figure the year..

No. Usually not needed anyway. Simply turn the amp on with no instrument plugged in, and turn controls up enough to have the scratchy sounds come through the speakers. Then, one at a time, rotate the controls from minimum to maximum maybe twenty times each ... you will hear dusty pots 'clean up' as you rotate the control(s). Just keep doing it until the static-y, scratching sounds stop, then move on to the next control.

This is assuming the pots are making scratchy noises to begin with (happens a lot with amps that haven't been used for a while). Using any form of spray cleaner runs the risk of leaving behind some kind of oily or sticky residue that will just help more dust collect in a shorter period of time. Always try the 'dry' clean method first.

But in this instance, the pots may not be the culprit, but it's worth rotating all the pots a few times anyway (sometimes they can actually 'freeze' and not rotate at all through lack of use).

With jack sockets, plug and unplug a jack a bunch of times into each socket. The nature of the construction and function makes them 'self cleaning' with use, so seldom-used sockets can become problematic (things like effects loop sockets). Try this dry method before spraying anything in there.

With valve (tube) sockets, it's also worth cleaning them (both sides of chassis) with a dry brush first, after bleeding the main filter caps. Only use spray products as a last resort, to limit the spread of residue throughout the chassis and components.

So there's a lot that can be achieved without spraying goodness-knows-what into an amp.

Of course the issue(s) may be none of these things, but they are simple and easy things you can do for free before possibly needing to delve deeper.

Thanks for the input Crusty! Yeah, the issue was occuring just during playing. wasnt when turning any knobs. So Dont figure its a pot. Wife has come home early last few days, so havent gotten to test it yet...#$@*%^#!!!!

Re: crackling..

plugged it up and the crackling is gone.. Of course the volume knob was crackling today, so twisted it a few times and its ok now.
however, it humming loud now.. might have been the cable configuration I had set up with it. will experiment one day when mrs (thats WAY too loud) isnt home.

Re: crackling..

might be a bad patch cable or pots in the guitar. i had some crackling going on, tried swapping tubes only to find out it was a bad pot in my guitar input and a bad patch cable.
