I posted earlier about the Crate VC5212 for which I traded a Peavey bass and $150 cash. Cleaned up and re-tubed with Russian 6P14P-EV (military spec EL84s) and JJ ECC83S tubes. That deal was just a bit in my favor by about $100 (my estimation). Then I snagged the 1968 Traynor Bass-Master YBA-1 head with the vintage tubes for $100. I re-tubed that one as well as wired in a three prong cord. Sounds really good through my computer but too loud with a guitar through a 2X12 cab.
THEN, today, I got a call from a CL woman who was selling a Fender 1X15 cab. The thing has coasters, built like a tank and is loaded with a Fender (Eminence) 15 inch speaker. I drove up, checked it out and left with it for $40 cash. Brought it home, cleaned it up, painted the grill and wired in a temp input jack. Then I plugged in the Traynor and demoed my 1973 Fender Precision bass. WOW! It's actually useable through this cab and not nearly as loud as with a guitar and a 2X12 cab.
THEN I ran a cord from the extension speaker output of my Crate VC2110R into the Fender cab. OMG. With your eyes closed, you would think I was plugged into a 30 watt combo. The 15 inch closed cab makes the most of the head or is that vice versa? It sounds HUGE. I will probably never use it's ten inch speaker again.
Thanks CL!
