Crate blue voodoo

Re: Crate blue voodoo

I've had 3. They were my "first" tube amps.

Like anything else, they are relative. When I had them, they were absolutely badass and the best sounding thing ever in my mind. That's because I hadn't had any experience with anything put cheap solid state junk like Peavey backstage amps and such until that time.

Later I ran up on a JCM900 and it blowed the Crates away. First Marshall I had played.

Later I ran up on my DSL and it is so far the best amp I've ever had, tons better sound quality than the Crate BV's.

For the money, they are o.k. but tons of stuff out there sounds better.

Yes sir; my buddy got a lil combo off the bay a couple years back. I think it sounds great. The cleans are where it really shines.

Re: Crate blue voodoo

Shame what happened to that company. a bit better quality and better business decisions and they coulda been a good company.[/QUOTE said:

What really did happen to them?

Crate was made in the US and owned by St. Louis Music Company (SLM) that also manufactured Ampeg. In the 90s Crate started to make some decent tube amps. The biggest problem was that Crate products of this period used single sided solder PCB boards (except the VC60) to keep their products inexpensive. This, cheap jacks and underpowered OTs in the 30 watt amps were 99% of all the issues that the company became known for with questionable quality.

The company was purchased by LOUD Technologies in 2001 or 2002 who moved all manufacturing and engineering to Asia.

Crate, Peavey, Bugera, and Behringer = all crap amps!

Re: Crate blue voodoo

I ended up having to record some tracks with one, when we were in Pittsburgh. It sounded alright, but lacked midrange character. I got some decent solo tones, with my wah parked in Schenkerland, but that was it. Overall, it sounded too modern for my tastes.

That said, I don't know what kind of speakers were in the Marshall 4x12 that I used, so it might not have all been the amp.
