Crate BV50H

Is this old Crate Blue Voodoo 50w Head worth the money? I've heard some people complain about the reliability, while others say it's great. Some People say it doesn't sound good, while others say it sounds great. Well, does it sound like the bigger models, available nowadays?

Re: Crate BV50H

Keep on walkin.' LOL. Seriously. They are trash, the early ones anyway. I used to own the 120 back in 1995 and blew the thing up 3 times within 2 months (fixed under warranty). The PCB just isn't/wasn't made to withstand the heat from the tubes. In a band situation it couldn't keep up with the other guitar player's 50 watt Marshall. Needless to say, I sold it for what I could get for it and bought a Marshall which I still have today and has never had a problem (there's reliability). There's another name for the Blue Voodoo. :D

The newer Crate V series are really nice however and are getting lots of people smiling at them.

Re: Crate BV50H

Are they seriously that bad? I heard one of the new models, and it sounds fantastic, I just thought the old ones were like them, only on less watts..

Re: Crate BV50H

In simple terms....POS! I had one and used it for about 6 months, when I took it in for repair, the list was a mile long of things wrong with it. They are pure crap and sound like pure crap! Just because they are tube doesn't mean they're good. The line 6 spider 2 sounded 10 fold better. Move on my friend, move on...

Re: Crate BV50H

What about one of the newer BV's then? I've looked at the BV60H, that's the newer version, right?

Re: Crate BV50H

With the newer ones, I don't know if the quality has improved but to me they still sound like crap. Look at the V Series. They sound incredible.

Re: Crate BV50H

I have looked at them, but unfortunaly the one I wanted went far too high in price. It was a nice head, and it's a shame I didn't get it.

Re: Crate BV50H

Do you have to have a head? Why not a combo? The V Series combos are very reasonable. The 30-watt is really nice, I've been eyeing it myself, and is plenty loud. The stock Crate speaker is so-so but I have played one with a Tone-Tubby speaker (made of hemp) and it sounded like a full blown stack, nice and thick. Amazing what a simple speaker change will do to an amp.

Re: Crate BV50H

No, it doesn't have to be a head, this just was a head, that's all. I'm looking for a good amp for a reasonable price, regardless if it's a head or a combo.

Re: Crate BV50H

Gotcha. Weren't you looking at an older Marshall combo? What happened to that one?

Re: Crate BV50H

Yes, actually I was, and it's still an possibility, but, it's a SS amp, and I have a bad feeling about SS amps..I'm not saying they're all bad, but I have a Marshall MG now, and it literally pisses me off..it started all this madness..it's like, I can't even play it because it sounds horribly, so I play my electric guitar without any amp because else it sounds terrible. And since I am getting a nice guitar soon, I'll want a nice amp that can bring out the tones of it properly.

Re: Crate BV50H

Do this, take your guitar down to the shop that has that Marshall and play your guitar through it. That's the only way you're going to know how you sound through it. How long have you been playing?

Re: Crate BV50H

It's not a shop, basically it's a danish auction site, quite like ebay. Well, I've been playing for almost about half a year now, and I'm getting really tired of that amp.

What about the crate vintage club 20 watt combo?

That's not a bad amp either. Those Vintage Clubs are nice too. I sold lots of them when I worked in a music store.

Your ear is still getting "tuned in" to what sounds good and what doesn't since you've been playing for almost 6 months. If any of your buddies play, and have been playing longer, have them help you out, and make sure they're open-minded and not all "high gain is the way" and all that jazz. It takes time to get your ear to really recognize what sounds good. What sounds good to you today will sound like ass to you in a few years.

Re: Crate BV50H

Well, the problem is I don't really know any people in real life who has an electric guitar and an amp. That's why I have to ask so much here, I've been looking at an Engl Screamer 50 too, I've read it's a very versatile amp, it can go from quiet to much gain, and since people praise them very much, would it be wrong to look into one of those?

Re: Crate BV50H

At the stage of the game you're at now, try anything and everything. That's how you're going to know what suits you the best. If you can get to a music store, go, play some of the guitars (unplugged first to test their acoustic properties and resonance) and try out some of the amps. Take your guitar with you to play through the amps. You'll meet some people there, and maybe befriend a salesman who can score you good deals.

Note: leave all belt buckles and bracelets at home to save any guitars from getting scratches. I'm not saying this because you're 17, I'm saying it because I've seen the horror that some new guitars go through from anyone playing them with jewelry on, not just teenagers either. :D

Re: Crate BV50H

Well, while it does sound like a good idea, I'm sorry to tell you that I do not have the possibility to do so, since the "nearest" music shop is indeed not very near at all, BUT, of course I could get my father to drive me home to the guy who owns the Engl for a testing? I could do that of course. Well, let's see what he wants for it first.

Re: Crate BV50H

What kind of music do you usually play? There are a lot of great, reasonably priced amps out there, especially in the used market.
