Crown Inlay on LP headstock??

Re: Crown Inlay on LP headstock??

...Or alien jack-in-the-box.

I wonder what was proposed and rejected....

Re: Crown Inlay on LP headstock??

Didn't some of the 2007 guitar of the week models have those?

Yes. It was a feature of all of the Classic Antique models. I have two of the GOTW Les Pauls: the Fireburst, and the Tom Morgan Artist, and there were others. They, and the Les Paul Standard Limited Editions I wrote about earlier, also have a single-bound headstock.

The Classic Antiques were pretty cool, but only lasted a couple of years in the Gibson lineup. Very lightweight chambered bodies, Slim Taper neck and Classic '57 and '57+ pickups. They came in a variety of finishes, but the special GOTW finishes were limited to 400 each. The guitars are very resonant, and sustain well.

My LP Classic Antique has it.It's called the Mother of Pearl Crown or Holly inlay They were common on a lot of older vintage Gibsons, before being reintroduced. lpca.jpgholly.jpg

I don't get that it looks like holly at all. Or, that's not what holly looks like. Looks like the person writing the description is confused: LPs used to use a thin veneer of holly painted black on the face of the headstock, but I can't imagine that symbol is supposed to BE holly.

Re: Crown Inlay on LP headstock??

Agreed. Holly tree wood was used for the faceplate of '50s vintage Les Pauls (and probably other guitars of that era). I have heard that somewhere in time, this was switched and they now use some kind of paper product, except on the Historic Les Pauls (and perhaps other Historic re-issue models).

Flowerpot.
