Crybaby Mods: Need more sweep, bass

Last night I modded my well-worn GCB-95 Crybaby for true bypass with a 3PDT switch (I intend to add an LED at some point), a new pot, and a yellow fasel. The sound improved with the fasel, the wah is a bit smoother and a lot cleaner now, but it has very little bass and mid sweep. All of the wah action takes place in the last half-inch or so of travel and the rest of the range is useless. I would like to add some range to the pedal so that it sounds a little fatter and is useful across it's entire sweep. Does anyone have any idea how I would accomplish this?

Re: Crybaby Mods: Need more sweep, bass

Since you've already started mods go the last mile and put in a new ICAR taper pot, it may or may not help...if you're still unhappy sell that wah and buy a new wah pedal...I say that becasue the next step is going to involve far more trouble that it could ever be worth.

Re: Crybaby Mods: Need more sweep, bass

before you get out the soldering iron, try physically ajusting the range of the sweep with the pot. you see the sawtooth thing that physically moves the pot when you use the treadle? try loosening it off and moving the pot so you're wah range is actually different. there is much more movement on that pot than the treadle sweep uses, so this is a very easy way to 'mod' your wah.

if that still doesn't give you the sound you're after, check out this site and see what you can do: http://www.stinkfoot.se/andreas/diy/mods/dunlop.htm

Re: Crybaby Mods: Need more sweep, bass

haha... of course it would be the most obvious solution. I messed up the pot position when I installed the new pot. It now wahs over the entire range of motion, but it could use a little more bass and mid response so I think I am going to swap in a 0.015uF cap and change a couple resistors, but that will be a project for another day, since I'm going to a jam session/new years party and want all my gear to be in working order.

Re: Crybaby Mods: Need more sweep, bass

has anyone else modded a crybaby on here? I am interested to know what you did and how it changed the sound. I can get parts really cheaply and I needed a project since it is nearly -40 degrees in town so skiing is out of the question.

Re: Crybaby Mods: Need more sweep, bass

I modded mine several years ago.....It started out with a broken switch but I ended up doing the LED, true bypass, red fasel, mid boost, vocal mod..........I love the way it sounds now, has a nasty, nasely "honk" about it. I did all the mods at once and threw it back together so I can't tell you which mod was the most effective in achieving the sound I desired. No patience! :(

Re: Crybaby Mods: Need more sweep, bass

I modded mine as well, a Rev. E board GCB-95. Changed the pot to an ICar pot, an Area 51 inductor, true bypass, and adjusted it for unity gain. Sounds like a whole different wah now. I still want to replace all the guts and am eyeing the Area 51 drop-in board.

Mine is the REV. E as well-no buffer. I like the wah now but I'm eyeing the Area 51 too....or maybe a Chicago Iron Parachute D.I.Y. Kit.
