...another day tweaking my amp and pedals resulting in frustration:sigh:....maybe someone here has some suggestions..my goal; to get a smooth bluesy clean, and an ac/dc kinda crunch (maybe a little crunchier)..out of my marshall dsl 100.....here's what i'm working with..mim strat (hss jb-b cool rails-m lil '59 n....into a weeping demon wah-cs-3 comp-ts9-flange-tuner-amp...[:ge-7- dl-4: (fx loop)]........ok, all thats besides the point..i like to keep my comp on at all times to get a nice picking response, i just can't get a setting out of the ss-3 that has the best of both worlds...right now i'm running it on full volume, tone at 1:00, attack at 11:00, and sustain at about 7:00...it's the closest i can get it to sound good on both channels...any setting suggestions will be appreciated..for any of the above listed gear, but mainly the comp...thanx in advance for any help.....and before it's suggested..the keeley comp is a few paychecks away..

Re: cs-3 users

Just a thought- wayyyyy too much stuff.

for the clean bluesy: Bass/mid/treble: 6/9/4, no gain, set the comp for a little squash, but not too much.

for the AC/DC: b/m/t: 5/9/7, gain maybe 5-7 at the most! NO COMP!!!! Maybe goose the amp a little with the screamer - mostly level, not much gain, and pump the eq towards the brighter end.

JB & lil 59 should be ok for this.

...the only problem is that the dsl has only 1 eq....same setting needs to work both channels...i should say that i only use the delay and flange on a few spacey clean parts...the eq as a mid boost, and the ts9 as a clean boost...my main concern is the comp, i'm just not digging the cs3..maybe the wrong amp for this new band as well:15:

Re: cs-3 users

i find Comps squeeze the heck out of the low notes way too much... i could never see using a Comp pedal on at all times... most players i know that have them turn them on and off when needed...

let that Marshall breathe.... no squishing it with a Comp... most likely you are not being able to turn that up enough to get natural Compression from it...

on a side note i know a few CS3 users who find them usefull... mine sits in a box un-used... but a Diamond Compressor i tried out a few years ago was amazing... it offers less Squish to the sound and i could see it being more usefull

Drop Montie's Opto mod in your CS-3 and you will throw rocks at the Diamond!! I agree the stock CS 3 colors the sound too much but with the mod it really become much more transparent and natural sounding.

Re: cs-3 users

I'm with Aceman on this one. No need for a comp playing AC/DC. That would not be helpful for that tone. Bluesy stuff loves a comp though. Have you modded the input cap value on that CS-3 yet? It gets sooo much better with one changed cap.

Re: cs-3 users

I used a cs-3 for years in several different places in my pedal board and finally scrapped it for a clean boost pedal. The only thing it's good for is creamy sustained leads IMO. Killing the dynamics of rhythm parts just doesn't make sense to me.

....no..haven't modded anything...i'm not that handy with a soldering iron..:(..i'm going to start practicing though..i have an old yamaha chorus pedal that i don't use, so i may open it up and do some sort of practice mod to get my skills up...i don't trust myself enough to learn on one of the expensive pedals..i just ordered an agile lp copy to get my feet wet in the pots/pickup department...all my strats modifications are done by a pro..and that too gets a little pricey..i've been playing for 10 years, and am now just starting to find what "good" tone is, so do it yourself mods are in my future..

Re: cs-3 users

Gotta get that thing modded! Either get the Monte Allums kit or order one pre-modded from IndyGuitarist. People I talk to who have the modded peddle say it is as good or better than boutique compressors - FAT and SMOOTH where you need it.

I have an Egnater Mod 50 tube head and even at Master volume up to noon or so I still find I need some more sustain for leads at times or a fatter, smoother, more refined lead tone....hence a compressor. I don't like them for clean ot rhythm. I am getting the modded CS-3.

Re: cs-3 users

OK - new signal chain:

Guitar > Comp > EQ > TS-9 > Amp

Set The amp up for the AC/DC, but without enough gain. Set the comp for your favorite blues squish, set the EQ to add a little bass and cut the treble from the AC/DC EQ. Set the TS-9 to add sufficient grit and level for AC/DC. COmp/EQ on for blues, TS-9 on for AC/DC. If by boost you mean for solos on either channel, use the OD 2 mode for the AC/DC grit, then put the TS-9 first.

Re: cs-3 users

........ok, after trying a few suggestions, i ditched the comp all together!! it seems after doing a few test recordings with it on different settings, and then a few without it...it wasn't providing the greatness that i thought it was...plan b is in effect and working fine...i ditched the eq as well...heres the new set-up..guitar-demon wah-boss line selector-blues driver-ts9-phase 90-tuner-amp...dl4 in the loop....i have the line selector set up in ab mode..(no loops, just have the a, and b set at different volumes to give me more or less drive out of the boxes..this lets me have a creamy blues tone on a's volume, and a thicker tone on b.....the guyatone flange wasn't cutting it either, so its going back, and was replaced with the trusty phase 90...i'm 90% there...just need to throw my custom/custom, and pearly gates neck in one of my other strats, and the tone quest should be over for now.....well, a rt 66 pedal, or sparkle drive may be auditioning for the drive spot on the board....thanx again for all the help fella's...i'll post a few pics soon...

Re: cs-3 users

The CS3 is GREAT if modded by Monte Allums....just as good as any vintage compressor. Couldn't live without it! I just got one...can't you tell!?
