CS Antiquity Pearly Gates - potted???

Hi everyone, this is my first post in this forum.

I just got myself a set of Custom Shop Antiquity Pearly Gates. Great sounding set!

However, I found something I didn´t expect. AFAIK this set was supposed to be unpotted, but while adjusting the polepieces I noticed there was some wax in there.

Of course this doesn't mean the pickup is fully potted, maybe just some light potting underneath the cover, but I am intrigued nonetheless.

For those of you who own the pickup, how's yours?

Thanks!

I have a set. Yes they are potted.

Need to get out the hair drier and melt some wax if you want to remove the cover.

Great, thanks for the info!

Actually I don´t have any plans of removing the covers or anything. Just curious :)

Re: CS Antiquity Pearly Gates - potted???

I haven't ordered the PG set from the CS, but on most sets I've ordered there is an option to select potted or unpotted. Some sets default to potted and you have to change it, and vice versa.

Re: CS Antiquity Pearly Gates - potted???

For CS, I think you can specify "lightly potted" also via the special instructions.

I got my set through GearTree/Amazon, it was not a direct order. It was advertised was unpotted.

So the ligtht potting was my "hope" when I saw there was some wax under the screws. Will try to remove the bottom ones to see if it gives me any hint in full/light potting.

Hard for me to elaborate on the subtleties as it's been a good while since I last played the regular PG...

However one thing I know for sure: this set have more "push", specially on the bridge.

Great set, worth every penny.

Just unscrewed the baseplate screws and there is some wax residue too.

Guess my set is indeed fully potted.

Well, I hope they still work for you.....I know how frustrating it is to buy one thing and get another. From my experience with SD products, since 2001, anything from the custom shop is fantastic. I usually prefer to order my own and accept the wait time, so I know I'm getting what I want.

Your set should sound fantastic.

How does it compare to a regular Pearly Gates?

Roughcast Alnico 2 magnets instead of polished. Gives a warmer sound with less treble.

And they’re wound hotter than regular PG’s. Higher DCR...more like Antiquitys.

I have both sets of Pearly's, both are great, but the CS set is to die for, best pickups i've ever owned, and they are lightly potted, which i think is great.
